Hi!
Does anyone know how self-employment is officially defined? I have a problem understanding how TE office applies this category. If it means engagement in work without contract relationship and other than being yrittäjä then even planting flowers in your own garden can be considered self-employment, which is an obvious non-sense.
Thank you,
Dina

Obvious nonsense is the right answer, unfortunately. Finland's sick 'welfare' system denies self-employment from a Finn unless he's already working for someone else - in that case he can also earn money in his own business, no problem. If you have an income you are allowed to make more money. If all you get is government handouts, you may not earn any more. You can earn 300e per month as wages though. I guess you are not a Finn, so why should you be asking about this at all? You should not be entitled to any social security funded by Finnish citizens, so employment, self-employment or a larger business should be your only options. Are you actually receiving unemployment benefits and want to earn money from your own business as well? Why should you be able to when it's denied from the half a million Finns who are looking for work? And, by the way, they classify work as a 'business' even if one earns no profits from it, or no money at all. It's all up to the mood of the 'public servant' when she evaluatews your case. It's called 'mutu' (= musta tuntuu = I feel that...)
