U.S. Fed Officials Express Anxiety Over House Prices, WSJ Says
By James Kraus
May 19 -- U.S. Federal Reserve Board officials expressed increased concern over the rise in domestic housing prices as a result of speculative buying, David Wessel writes in the Wall Street Journal.
Fed Governor Donald Kohn last month said given the growing number of real estate purchases by investors, ``prices have gone up far enough,'' Wessel noted.
Fed chairman Alan Greenspan is due to speak at a luncheon tomorrow at the Economic Club of New York and if he mentions housing, it may be in the same vein as Kohn, Wessel added.
Though Greenspan hasn't yet spoken about housing in the same terms he used when he referred to the `irrational exuberance'' of the stock market in 1996, the Fed and other regulators this week advised banks that home-loans are ``subject to increased risk if interest rates rise and home values decline,'' Wessel noted.
