Noinhan se pitääkin olla jos muuri on kunnossa, ja kaikilla kunnon muureilla onkin. Lisäksi softamuurin olisi syytä osata rajoittaa koneelta uloslähtevää liikennettä ohjelmien perusteella, en esim. keksi mitään järkevää syytä miksi Wordin pitäisi päästä nettiin mutta aika usein se sinne yrittää.... Sama juttu monen muun ohjelman kanssa, varsinkin MicroSoftin tekemien ohjelmien.
Lisäksi kunnon muuri osaa laskea halutut ohjelmat vain paikalliseen verkkoon mutta ei nettiin, eli rajata ohjelmien pääsyn omaan aliverkkoon (tuo edellyttää toimiakseen että aliverkkomääritykset yms. on tehty oikein). Ja mites XP:n omassa muurissa ohjelman laskeminen nettiin ilman että sille annetaan oikeus toimia "palvelimena", aika moni ohjelma osaa toimia myös ns. palvelimena ja useimmiten sen salliminen aiheuttaa turhia riskejä. Kunnollisella softapalomuurilla saa rajattua tulevat yhteydet paikallisesta verkosta sallituiksi ja netistä kielletyiksi (tosin ulkoinen rautamuuri on varmin netistä tulevien yritysten pysäyttämiseen).
