Violinist plays for skin magazine

LOS ANGELES - Anne-Sophie Mutter has her cleavage-baring gowns, Vanessa-Mae her wet T- shirt music video, and Lara St.John her barely covered CD cover shot, all in the service of selling more violin concertos.
But none of these Gorgeous Women of Classical Music has gone quite as far in trying to stir the masses - and sell some records - as Linda Lampenius, a striking Finnish blonde with
impeccable musical credentials.
Lampenius has played the violin for all but five of her 28 years, growing up performing in the classical-music hotbed of Helsinki, Finland, as the child of two veteran performers.
Though it’s been two decades since Lampenius first visited the United States as part of a youth symphony tour, she finally made a splash on the American consciousness in the past month.
That’s when Lampenius landed on the cover of Playboy’s April issue, wearing skin-tight leather and the stage name Linda Brava. On the pages inside, she wore just skin.
Her dare to be bare was part of a calculated kick-start to an international music career, as well as an effort to attract acting offers in Hollywood, she said.
So far, it seems to be working. She recently signed a four-record deal with EMI International to create both classical and pop albums and is starting to get acting offers.
She is preparing to record her first album, a collection of Mozart violin concertos that will be released under her real name. Within a couple of months of that LP’s release, her first pop violin album will hit the streets, under her Linda Brava stage name.
That split-personality approach will carry over into her tour next winter in support of the albums, she said.
She plans to give two concerts a night, one a classical performance in a concert hall, the other a pop performance in a nightclub, each under a different name and with a very different look.
There’ll be no black leather, she swears, when she takes the stage for a classical music performance. But she’ll show plenty of skin, vamping with her violin when her pop music is in play.
“I never do classical concerts looking sexy,” Lampenius said. But with her pop albums competing for attention with eye-catching divas like Madonna and Mariah, “This is a way for people to notice me. People will see the pictures (in Playboy), will see that side of me, and it will sell.”
Lampenius already has had a life bursting over in Europe, modeling underwear, selling cigars, cider and chewing gum as a spokeswoman, racing sports cars, even serving on the Helsinki city council.
Now she’s living mostly in Los Angeles, practicing six to 10 hours a day for her recording
dates. She’s also spending time with a new boyfriend, and taking dialect and acting lessons to improve her English and her chances of landing movie roles.
“I think sometimes when there’s not that much to do, I feel much more hurried and don’t have as much time to do everything,” Lampenius said. “I think people are far too lazy.” Brava indeed.
