But the Laguna II’s most important talent is perhaps its best hidden one: the French contender is one of the world’s safest cars. It scored five stars in the ultra-stringent Euro-NCAP crash test -- the first car to achieve this. More recently, the Mercedes-Benz C-class has also scored five starts, although the points rating is slightly lower than that of the Renault.
Thus far, Topcar’s Laguna long-termer has conducted itself with virtually fault-free aplomb -- a track record that would have almost certainly continued to the conclusion of the test. However, a bumping escapade with another road user has meant a very much unscheduled visit to the panelbeater.
It’s not the kind of test we like to subject our long-termers too, but just how well the repairs are done is likely to be the subject of our very next update. For now, we’re having to do without our steed, though …
