The Adelaide Hospital animal study found mice
tumours (lymphomas) doubled with 18 months of
exposure, one-hour per day, at much the same
power densities as experienced by a GSM handset
user. This was a confidence-level more than ten
times the 1% generally classed by scientists
as "highly significant". And, since it deals with
DNA/cancer changes, the relevance to humans is
also very highly important. The fact that the B-
cells were involved, makes it even more so.
2. In 1995 Lai and Singh showed double-strand
breakages in DNA in live rat brains, with both
pulsed and steady waveforms after a single 2 hour
exposure period. In a number of studies over the
previous years, they had also shown excessive
single-strand breaks (over controls), but
improved detection techniques revealed excessive
double-strand breaks were present also.
The difference is important because single-strand
breaks are common (but undesirable), while double-
strand breaks create serious genetic alterations
of the DNA strands, and can lead to cancer, cell
death or mutagenic problems. Verschaeve et al.
(1994) and Phillips et al (1997) have also shown
DNA strand breaks.
3. In 1994 Sarkar looked at the effect of low
power microwave on the mouse genome by direct DNA
analysis. His mice were exposed to microwaves at
less than half cellphone power densities for two
hours a day over a period of 120, 150 and 200
days. DNA samples from the testis and brain
(control and exposed) were examined and
substantial banding changes were found with the
DNA in the exposed group. This ties in with Lai-
Singh.
4. Way back in 1974. Skidmore and Baum irradiated
tumour-prone laboratory mice with pulsed electric
fields for 33 weeks. The exposed group had over
twice the leukaemia rate of the controls.
5. Szmigielski (1982) exposed lab mice to
microwaves for 2 hours a day, 6 days a week for
varying period up to 10 months. A variety of
experiments were performed on the mice over that
period, which suggested that RF exposure
accelerated the development of breast cancer,
skin cancer and lung cancers.
In 1988 he did a similar experiment on mice
injected with sarcoma cells and concluded that
the radiation impaired the immune system and
substantially lowered resistance to cancer
growth.
6. In 1992 Chou studied 100 rats exposed for most
of their lifetime to very low levels of pulsed
microwave. The exposures were for 21.5 hours a
day, between the ages of 2 and 24 months. The
exposed group had 18 malignancies while the
control only had 5 (3.5-times). However the types
of cancers varied greatly (unlike the Adelaide
Hospital study, where the mice were prone to one
type only) and the smaller numbers of each
variety reduced the confidence level.
7. In 1990 Cleary demonstrated an altered rate of
DNA synthesis and increased proliferation of
human glioma cells (in a laboratory culture)
after a single exposure to microwave radiation.
Gliomas are cancers of the brain and nervous
tissue, and they seem to be highly related to R/F
and ELF exposures (as you would expect, since
this is an electrical system). What Cleary found
was consistent with tumour formation, and these
changes were observed in the cells up to five
days after a single 2 hour exposure.
8. In 1985, 1989 and 1991, Balcer-Kubiczek and
Harrison also found increased cancer cell
proliferation in transgenic mice embryos when
exposed to microwaves. The effect was enhanced
when a tumour-promoter drug was used -- but out
of proportion to the ratio you'd expect by
summing the two effects.
9. A 1962 Swiss study (Prausnitz and Susskind)
exposed mice to low-power pulsed microwaves for
4.5 minutes a day, 5 days a week, for 59 weeks.
There were external disease problems during this
experiment, but the survivors had 3.5-times the
rate of lymphatic or myeloid leukemias among the
exposed group than among the controls.

JUNK-SCIENCE INDEX
Professor Glantz's Lancet article
I am just holding this temporarily because some
browsers are unable to access The Lancet site.
Professor Glantz has written a superb expose of
how science corruption was organised in the
tobacco industry, but in my opinion he has missed
the point that it was far more widespread than
this.
You will note that all of those listed below in
corrupting the chemical industry sciences and
cellphones, are also the names listed in the
tobacco documents.

With these names and acronyms you'll only begin
to touch the tip of the iceberg of evidence now
emerging as to how these shonks, PR people and
corporate lobbyists took over the definition of
scientific proof and the regulation of 'risk'
standards.

Steve Milloy and other Junkscience Spin Doctors
In this dodgy world of science-for-sale there are
two basic types of operators. Those on the PR end
of the slimy scale, and those on the science and
research end. This article looks at the Spin
Doctors of Junkscience.

What's the truth behind the Alar scare?
The big Apple scare of a few years ago is used by
some industry flaks as evidence of irresponsible
activist scare-mongering. But there's more to the
story than this.
How the Press Agencies handle EMF studies
This is now a world which gets most of its
international newspaper news through a couple of
press agencies -- mainly Reuters and AAP. These
organisations also distribute press-releases, and
obviously for a price they will mix the two.
Dr George Carlo: This is your life.

This is a commercial offshoot of the Harvard

Of Mice and Men
There is so much misinformation being generated
about the Adelaide Hospital (and other) studies,
that this is an attempt to provide a lay-man's
overview of fallacious arguments. It is a good
way to help train your bullshit detector.

"Why the delays in publishing?
Two years have gone by since the basic statistics
were done, but the findings were of such a nature
that follow-up work needed to be done with a
laboratory in Maryland, USA to confirm some
results, then it took four tries to get the work
published. The rejections were not on the basis
of inadequate science, however, but on purely
political grounds, according to those involved.
The subject was too hot for many scientific
journals to handle.
According to one of those involved, 'Science'
magazine rejected publication on the grounds that
the report "would cause a panic"
"I couldn't agree more on the last point, but
nothing done in the last few years with the
exception of the Drs. Lai-Singh work in Seattle
has more obviously established that cell-phone
safety has not yet been proved. There has been
evidence accumulating over many years that the
long-term effects of radio-frequency exposures
may have serious consequences for a small percent
of the population, but this has been ignored by
the industry and by governments. "
"The total exposure period is very much less than
can be expected from human use over a lifetime,
so while some of the scientists downplayed the
importance, saying, "humans are not rodents"
another pointed out that "DNA is DNA". If the
radiation effects the mice, it will almost
certainly effect humans. "

"...Twenty per cent of these animals in this case
were going to get lymphoma, which in fact was
what we found, but we also found, of course, that
if you expose them to GSM signals this doubled
the incidence of cancer.
There have been a number of criticisms of the
study, that it did not go for long enough. We
only did 18 months, and the reason for doing 18
months was because we did not want to have the
diseases that occur with age. In the last six
months you get all sorts of age related diseases
occurring, which can confuse the results, so we
wanted to have a look at 18 months when they were
relatively healthy, and we could just concentrate
on what we wanted to do. "
"we spent a long time looking at this before we
finally finished our publication because we
thought we had done something terribly wrong
because it seemed that the result was quite
dramatic. We knew that we had not overheated the
animals, but we did not know what else could have
occurred, so that delayed the study-plus a few
journals felt that it was too hot to handle so we
got a few rejections on the publication. "
"The one message I would really like to convey
though is that motorists should be strongly
discouraged from using mobile phones while
driving. There is no doubt that- "

The Adelaide Hospital Study This was a major
report from Adelaide Hospital in Australia, which
established a clear link between pulsed GSM phone
handset radiation levels, and tumour promotion in
genetically-engineered mice. The importance of
this study is that it kills, once and for all,
the old "Thermal Only" claims. It is also often
called the "Repacholi Study".
Similar findings from other research. The
Adelaide Hospital study findings were not an
isolated instance. There have been dozens of
findings over the years which have indicated
similar links with DNA and potential cancer
problems.

Media Manipulation
Attempts are being made to manipulate the
Australian media into not reporting this story --
or reporting it in a one-par box hidden in the
back pages. The industry "experts" are out in
force trying to hose down any suggestion that
these findings are worrying, and Dr Repacholi is
being bought it via an expensive video-conference
to explain why this research should be ignored.
See Media Manipulation.
This must be the only time in history when so
much money and so much energy has been put into
convincing the media that important research is
of little value -- by the scientist themselves!
