Minna, how long have you snowboarding?
For six years now. I tried snowboarding for the first time when I was thirteen, but I did it only once a year at first. I started doing it seriously when I was sixteen.
How did you become interested in it?
I had a schoolmate who got me into snowboarding. I thought it was fun and after my frist competition I was totally hooked.
There are many different styles of snowboarding, aren’t there? What is your main style?
I do half pipe, mainly. That is where you come down the “pip” and do all kinds of turns and jumps. It is quit free, really, what you can do. There are no required moves.
It is based on skateboarding and surfing isn’t it? Have you tried them yourself?
I haven’t done any surfing but I tried skateboarding when I was younger. I didn’t like it. Thought, because you can easily hurt yourself doing it..
Tell us a little bit about your practising. How often do you practise?
When I’m abroad, I normally practise six days a week on the slope, about four hours a day. In summer I do other kinds of physical exercise, like jogging and weight training to get more strength and endurance. There is also a special training programme to give you more speed and improve your take-offs.
What do you need to start snowboarding and how much does it cost to get stated?
Well, good equipment costs a lot of money. What you need is the board, boots and bindings. Otherwise, it is a lot cheaper to do snowboarding in Finland because the tickets for the ski lifts are cheaper here. It gets very expensive when you travel abroad, but luckily I have good sponsors who pay my expenses.
Are clothes and looks important?
To some people they are. But I never bought any expensive clothes. I used to make my own clothes or borrowed dad’s old jackets. I think the main thing is that your clothes are warm and they don’t get wet easily.
What are the reasons why people take up snowboarding as a hobby?
Well, first of all, it is very rewarding, because you learn it more quickly than, for example, downhill skiing. You learn something new every day. And it is wonderful to be out in the fresh air and enjoy the scenery. But the best thing is that you get such great friends. All snowboarders stick together and are good friends.
What makes a good snowboarder? What are your best qualities, for example?
Self-confidence is very important. You have to believe in yourself to succeed. My best quality is that I’m quite calm and I’ve got good nerves in competitions. On the other hand, my style should be a bit more aggressive. And sometimes I am a bit scared.
What has this hobby taught you?
Well, it has made me more open somehow. When I started, I was terribly shy but now it is a lot easier for me to start talking to people. That’s why it is a good hobby for anyone who is shy. You can be on your own but still you have a group of good friends around. Then, af course, I have had a chance to practise languages: English, French, and Swedish with my Norwegian friend. I’ve also learned some German.
Some “snurfers” take big risks, skiing off-piste and jumping off cliffs. Have you ever had any accidents?
Luckily, I haven’t, but one of my friends died in an avalanche. I don’t want to take unnecessary risks.
What are your goals for the future?
I would like to improve other styles as well, such as freestyle. My aim is to do well in the World Sup and perhaps the next Olympics. You never know. Perhaps I’ll start coaxing. And I’d like to take up a new hobby, maybe drawing or dancing or dome self-defence sport. I don’t have any time for them now. But I don’t want to do just sports. I’d like to study something as well, maybe languages. But a nine-to- five job is not for me.
Well, I wish you the best of luck and thank you for giving us time for the interview.
Thank you. My pleasure

Minna, kauanko olet lumilautaillut?
Kuuden vuoden ajan.
Mikä on sinun pääasiallinen tyylisi?
Harrastan half-pipea pääasiassa. Siinä tullaan alas "kourua" ja tehdään kaikenlaisia käännöksiä ja hyppyjä. On oikeastaan aika vapaata mitä voit tehdä.
No, hyvät varusteet maksavat paljon.
Itseluottamus on todella tärkeää.
No, se on tehnyt minusta jotenkin avoimemman.
Onko sinulle koskaan sattunut onnettomuuksia?
Onnekseni ei, mutta yksi ystävistäni kuoli lumivyöryssä. En halua ottaa turhia riskejä.
Mitkä ovat tulevaisuudentavoitteesi?
Haluaisin parantaa muissakin lajeissa kuten freestylessa.
No, toivotan sinulle mitä parhainta onnea ja kiitos ajastasi tähän haastatteluun.
Kiitos. Ilo oli minun puolellani.
Kiitos toooosi paljon !!! :):):)
