Artifact were designed to run under Windows 98. So your game may need a little tweaking to run smoothly on a computer running Windows 7, Windows Vista or Windows XP. Before patching, try this simple fix:

After installing the game, locate the tomb3.exe or tr3gold.exe file. (Use the Search function in the Windows Start Menu if you have trouble.)
Right-click on the tomb3.exe or tr3gold.exe icon and choose 'Properties' from the drop-down menu.
Click the 'Compatibility' tab.
Check the box next to 'Run this program in compatibility mode for' and choose 'Windows 98/Windows Me' from the list.
Click the 'OK' button.
Run the game as usual.
If that doesn't work, you may also need to download and install one of the unofficial Windows 7/Vista/XP patches, which are part of tombraiderchronicles.com's excellent Windows 7, Vista and XP Tomb Raider Solution.

If downloaded demo files won't install, you may need to set the compatibility mode on the downloaded demo files as described in the paragraph above before installing, as well as on the game program files once they are installed.

If you receive an error message saying "DirectX setup failure" or the installation program appears to start but then hangs and will not install, it may help to restart your computer in Safe Mode (tap F8 during startup). Then install the game while in Safe Mode and restart the system normally. You can then try adjusting the compatibility settings, as described above, or install any patches.

Other Patches & Utilities for Tomb Raider 3
There are various other patches for TR3, including an official patch to fix various issues, a couple of video card-specific patches, and a few unofficial patches for fun stuff like flight and red blood.

PC TR3 Official Patch (471 KB) - This is for the PC CD version of Tomb Raider 3. It fixes various issues, including missing textures, invisible walls, level looping, AWE64 sound issues, etc. For details see here. (Note that there are different versions of this patch for various countries. This is the North American patch. Also, your original save files may not work with the patched game. So either patch before playing or download savegames from this site.)
Flight cheat patch (5 KB) - for TR2, 3 & 4 - unofficial, use at your own risk.
Red blood patch (311 KB) - unofficial, use at your own risk. Fixes censored versions of the game so blood appears red instead of pink. (As far as I know, this patch doesn't work with Windows XP/Vista/7.)
In addition to the official game patch, various hardware-specific patches were also released. Most of this hardware is no longer in use today, but if you need any of these patches, visit Eidos Tech Support or use Google to search for your particular hardware if necessary.
