Irish Kennel Clubin rotu-info-sivuilta löytyy "Like many dogs in the Terrier group, not really appreciated by gentlemen sportsmen before the middle of the 19th century, the Irish Glen of Imaal is an old breed which was simply ignored for a long time, rather than the result of later breed experiments. He is very much a local dog, confined to the bleak area of the Glen of Imaal. The farmers of this area, who were descended from soldiers given land in the 16th and 17th centuries as payment for service rendered to the British Crown, had to utilize their natural cunning and dexterity to survive in this harsh terrain. A dog, who could not pull his weight in the day-to-day struggle for existence would not be tolerated. So he had to spend long hours propelling dog wheels and was often pitted against other dogs in the dubious sport of dog fighting, customs now disappeared. Before the Irish Glen of Imaal Terrier became known at dog shows, he had evolved through generations of hard work into the strong sturdy dog we know today."

löytyy seuraavaa tietoa:

"Of all the terrier breeds, The Glen has the least factual history of any of the terrier breeds."

"The Glen of Imaal Terrier was a dog that worked for its living around the cottage, doing what ever was required, watch dog for the cottager’s crops, herding stock or killing vermin, the trifling cost of his upkeep being well within the means of the poorest farmer. This tough terrier was not a pursuit dog but an earth worker used to draw fox, badger and otter.

"A 14” dog with a long back he was capable of killing all vermin. He was firstly a family dog and wonderful in protecting children, and a very keen worker with sheep. He also warned the rebels when the enemy approached; he was never a fighting dog. Most of the Glen of Imaal was a mountainous area but there were many prosperous farms in the area owned by the descendants of the Militia and the Highlanders. Among its duties was to combat the badger and the fox. It is a silent worker."

Glen on Imaalin Terrieri -rodun amerikkalaisen rotujärjestön sivulla mainitaan rodun historiallisista käyttötarkoituksista ainoastaan maatilan yleiskoira, pikkuriistan ja mäyrän metsästys sekä paistinkääntäjänä toimiminen. Ei siis sanaakaan taistelukoirataustasta.

Rodun soveltuvuudesta ja luonteesta kerrotaan mm. : "Glens are game. Other furry creatures are often seen as prey. They are terriers, after all. And like most terriers, that gameness can be expressed as aggressiveness towards other canines that they perceive as adversaries. It has often been said that a Glen will rarely start a fight but is likely to finish it. Yet many Glens live happily in the company of other dogs...some even with cats, especially if they were raised together. Proper introduction, supervision, and instruction are required. Many Glens are not suited for the dog park, but make excellent loving pets."

http://www.glens.org/

Sivustolla http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/glenimaalterrier.htm kohdassa "origin" kerrotaan seuraavaa: "The Glen of Imaal Terrier is a dog of unknown origins, but is of Irish descent. The breed received his name from the Glen of Imaal, in County Wick low, Ireland. The breed’s early job was as a hunter, silently going after vermin, and going to ground after fox and badgers, dragging out the pray. Gamers put them in a pit with badgers, timing them on the kill, until the so-called sport was banned in 1966. The dogs were also used as turnspit dogs: Glens were put on a treadmill and would walk for hours, turning a large rotisserie wheel that was used to cook meat over an open flame. This spunky little terrier can still catch vermin and with little training it can still be used to successfully hunt foxes and badgers. The Glen was first presented publicly at an Irish dog show in 1933. It is rare in the USA and was recognized by the AKC in 2004."

Eikä taaskaan sanakaan koiratappeluissa käyttämisestä...

Wikipediassa ei mainita koiratappelutaustasta mitään: "The Glen was bred, like all terriers, for eradicating vermin such as rat, fox, badger, and otter, and also as a general-purpose working dog for herding. According to Irish lore, which is repeated in many descriptions of the breed, Glen of Imaal Terriers were also used as turnspit dogs to turn meat over fires for cooking. However, actual evidence for this is scarce, and engravings of turnspit dogs from the 19th century do not show much resemblance to the modern Glen."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glen_of_Imaal_Terrier

Hyvä nimimerkki "kyllä on" eri bullipoju.

Niiden määrällinen painoarvo keskustelussa on silti vähäinen, koska jokaisen teksti on identtinen.

Sinun ansiostasi tuli minulle lähes tuntematon rotu paljon tutummaksi!
