Mozilla Windows shell: protocol handler vulnerability (moz250180)
Description
This bug allows to open local files and folders from a web page using the shell: protocol URLs. For example "shell:windows" URL will open the Windows directory. On Windows XP it is also possible to start local programs, for example "shell:windows\system32\calc.exe" will start Calculator. It might be also possible to download and run remote programs using this vulnerability.
The bug only affects Windows installations of Mozilla, Firefox and Thunderbird. If you are not running Windows your browser is not vulnerable.
Technical Details
Mozilla and other Mozilla-based browsers support external protocol handlers. That means that if Mozilla itself does not know how to handle the protocol in the URL it will call an external program to handle it. On Windows the program will be chosen according to the settings in the Registry.
Shell: protocol is handled by Windows Explorer. It apears that it is possible to open local files and folders from a web page using the shell: protocol URLs. For example "shell:windows" URL will open the Windows directory. On Windows XP it is also possible to start local programs, for example "shell:windows\system32\calc.exe" will start Calculator.
Recommendations
Mozilla, Firefox and Thunderbird on non-Windows platforms are not vulnerable to this problem.
Users of Mozilla, Firefox and Thunderbird on Windows can install a patch. Please read the instructions before installing the patch.
This vulnerability is fixed in Mozilla 1.7.1, Firefox 0.9.2, Thunderbird 0.7.2. If you are using earlier versions of these browsers, consider upgrading.
Additional Information
Mozilla Bug #250180. Shell: protocol allows access to local files and can lead to a DOS
What Mozilla users should know about the shell: protocol security issue
FullDisclosure: MOZILLA: SHELL can execute remote EXE program
Miten tuon voisi korjata?

On Nortonikin, palomuuri tiukimmalla.
Koko testi on ihan huuhaata.
Ensinnäkin aloituksessa:
Browser name: Opera/7.54 (X11; Linux i686; U) [en]
Version: unknown
Platform: unknown
tuntee version ja alustan, kuitenkin sanoo: "Unknown" ;-)
Antaa saman "riskiluokituksen" vaikka testin aikana Opera aukaisee ikkunan Unknown address:shell:windows
