Error: "Norton AntiVirus has encountered an internal program error" (4002, 517)

Situation:
After installing Norton AntiVirus 2003 or Norton AntiVirus 2003 Professional Edition (NAV) 2003 with the default settings and restarting your computer, you notice that Auto-Protect is disabled. When you right-click the NAV Auto-Protect icon in the system tray and then click Enable Auto-Protect, you see the error message "Norton AntiVirus has encountered an internal program error." In the lower-left corner of the window, you see the numbers 4002,517.

Solution:

Before you begin: If you see one of the following error messages before you see error 4002,517, then follow the steps in the document that applies to that error message--otherwise, continue with these instructions.
Error: "A settings violation has been detected. The security settings have been tampered with..." (1004,1)
Error: "Runtime Error!...C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\...R6025 - Pure virtual function call" when running Norton AntiVirus 2003
This problem should be fixed by the latest Symantec Common Client program update. To install the update, start Norton AntiVirus, run LiveUpdate, download all available updates including the Symantec Common Client Update, and then restart the computer when prompted. For details on how to run LiveUpdate, see the document How to run LiveUpdate.

If the Norton AntiVirus program update does not fix the problem, then there are other solutions. Try each solution in the order listed. If the first solution does not fix the problem, then go on to the next solution. Do this until the problem is fixed. Follow the instructions in the section for your operating system.

Windows XP

On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
In the Open box, type MSCONFIG and click OK.


In the System Configuration Utility, click the Services tab.
Verify that the following Items are checked:
Norton AntiVirus Auto Protect Service
Symantec Event Manager
Symantec Password Validation Service
Script Blocking Service (You may not see this option if Norton AntiVirus was factory installed on your new computer.)
XtreamLok License Manager (You will not see this entry on some versions of Norton AntiVirus.)




Click the Startup tab.
Verify that the following items are checked:
ccApp
RegVfy




If any of the listed entries are unchecked, check them.
Click Apply.
Click OK.
If any of the listed entries are missing, it indicates that Norton AntiVirus was not installed successfully. If you see this, go on to the section "To remove and reinstall Norton AntiVirus" and follow the instructions.
Restart the computer.

There is no easy way to confirm that the Norton AntiVirus program files are set to load on startup on Windows 2000. The only option is to go to the next section "To re-install the Symantec shared files (Symevent)." If that solution does not fix the problem, then continue on to the section "To remove and reinstall Norton AntiVirus."

Download the Symevent installer file Sevinst.exe.
When prompted, select "Save this Program to Disk," and then select drive C as the download location.



Click Save. Click Close if prompted.
Click Start > Run. Type: C:\sevinst.exe /r in the open line, and then click OK
Close all programs, and then restart the computer. If you continue to see the error, then go to the next solution
