London-born Cat Stevens had his first hit record in 1966 and sold 25 million albums around the world before turning his back on the music business in 1978 and converting to Islam. He emerged from virtual isolation in 1989 to support a death sentence imposed by Iran's Ayatol-lah Ruhollah Khomeini on novelist Salman Rushdie, who was accused of blaspheming in his bestselling "Satanic Verses" . "The Koran makes it clear -- if someone defames the prophet, then he must die," Stevens said at the time.

The young Yusuf Islam became a treasured battleaxe for the Muslim community and a bit of a laughingstock to the rest of the world -- a humorless dogmatist with fake exotic accent [hihihihii...].

He auctioned his guitars and gold records for Islamic charities, changed his name and denounced his old songs as akin to blasphemy [jumalanpilkka]. Worse, he became associated with the most fiercely fundamentalist forms of Islam, a stern and humourless dogmatist, apparently intolerant of those who did not share his faith.

Yusuf made it clear he had no plans to return to singing and recording pop songs, despite healthy sales of his old albums. "That chapter is closed
"There is nothing I really miss about the pop world. I am very happy with the balance of my life at the moment," he added.

There are many reasons not to like him. Yusuf Islam does not shake hands with women jour-nalists, or look them straight in the eye. As the defender of a faith that doles out harsh justice, he supported the fatwa against Salman Rushdie. When he argued in a debate at the Oxford Union that "submission to Allah is not at odds with freedom and democracy," he lost the vote.
'The strict orthodox view is that one does not use musical instruments. There is an allowance for some percussive drums, but that's about it.

More than 20 years after hanging up his guitar, the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens sur-faced Monday to promote an album he helped record for victims of the Bosnian conflict.
"Nobody can stop songs from emanating from the human soul." Islam plays no guitar on the album. "I personally don't want to pick up a guitar again," he said. "I don't feel like it. I'm much more of a poet.

TO MY surprise, Yusuf Islam shakes my hand and looks me [Cassandra Jardine = nainen!] straight in the eye. A few months ago, he would not have spoken to me at all, let alone sub-mitted to physical contact.
His tiptoeing gestures towards liberality seem to be motivated by a wish to improve the "grim, sad-faced" image of Islam. But he still refuses to attend Christian weddings because of the presence of drinkers.
At home, his daughters are occasionally allowed to listen to classical music - but he still considers pop music to be "gross."
"It is time to pray," he explains at last. As he rushes off, he adds: "It doesn't matter that I'm Late. I'm flexible."

Does he (Yusuf) ever sing the old songs in the bath while scrubbing up for prayers?
"More than I used to. I've been revisiting songs from out of the archives because they want to release some unreleased material. So yeah, occasionally I find myself thinking about it -- more thinking than singing."
What if he found himself in the charts again?
"Embarrassing," he whispers.

He recently took the train to Cambridge and found himself on the Tube in rush hour. The experience sent him flashing back to Matthew & Son [Vanha hittibiisi] to commuter alienation.
"There are so many people still on that line. I miss those issues, to be able to sing about them and give a little boost to someone who feels lost."

Islam said that he chooses not to play the guitar anymore so that his music is more widely acceptable to Muslims.
"There are strict orthodox Muslims that wouldn't approve of the guitar, and I want to be friends with everyone," he said.

Musiikin "kielto" on käytännössä tulkinta kysymys, Koraanin kohdassa jossa kielletään valheellisten tarinoiden kuuntelu, puhutaan Persialaisista tarinoista joissa vääristeltiin historiaa ja tositapahtumia. Koraanissa itsessäänkin on jokaisella Suuralla oma melodia.
