There are are no jokers in the hand that Peugeot is about to deal – only a couple of aces. This is the first picture of an Audi TT rival from the firm. Bosses hope they'll have visitors to the Geneva Motor Show feeling flush and running straight to the French car maker's stand.
The RC is a 307-sized 2 2 sports coupé with a choice of four-cylinder 16v engines. The black car – badged RC Spades – is a 2.0-litre 180bhp petrol version delivering 202Nm of torque, while the RC Diamonds - in stunning red - is a 2.2 175bhp diesel version producing 400Nm.
The rear-mounted units are housed sideways in an 'east-west' configuration to offer a sportier feel and help distribute weight equally. Each is mated to a six-speed sequential manual gearbox featuring steering wheel-mounted controls. The poised on-road look is thanks to the instantly recognisable Peugeot headlights, which use smooth glass technology and double reflectors. The carbon bodyshell incorporates a high-strength steel cage and rollover bar, and rides on 18-inch alloy wheels with Michelin Sport tyres.
Inside, the sporty theme continues. Styling is identical on both cars, with stainless steel and aluminium trim adding a touch of class. The cloth and leather-covered bucket seats maintain the red-and-black theme and have harness-style seatbelts. The instrument panel combines digital and analogue technology. There's a radio/CD player, telephone and sat-nav, which uses a seven-inch colour screen. Although no official figures are available, Peugeot claims the performance of the RC will be competitive, with the 0-60mph sprint completed in six seconds. Top speed should be more than 140mph. Economy figures are impressive, too, with the RC Spades giving 36.7mpg and the Diamonds version 57.6mpg.
The RC is slightly longer than its 307 hatchback sibling, but much lower at only 1.15m high. Many of the 307's electrical innovations have made it into the coupé, including air-con and rain-sensitive windscreen wipers.
A Peugeot spokesman told Auto Express that producing two distinct versions showed how serious the firm was about its diesel line-up, and that it was prepared to consider oil-burning versions of all the models it builds. He added that while the coupés were showcases for future cars, a decision on whether the RC design would go into production hadn't been taken yet.

"Like most wild Peugeot concepts, the pair are unlikely to make it to production - particularly as their bodies are made from carbon fibre and the they have rear-mounted engines. However, the red RC Diamonds is most likely being shown to increase the profile and customer-acceptance of a high performance car with a diesel engine."
