The University of the Arts Helsinki is recruiting a

LECTURER IN SOUND ART

for a fixed-term post of three years, during the period of 1.8.2018-31.7.2021 (starting earlier or later upon agreement). This is a part-time post, with occupation of 50 % of full working hours. The fixed-term nature of the lectureship is based on the need for flexibility stemming from the requirements of continuously developing and renewing studies.

Working environment

The University of the Arts Helsinki, whose operational environment is international, consists of three academies. The different academies provide teaching in English and offers international master degree programmes.

The lecturer will work at the University of the Arts Helsinki's Open Campus that organises and coordinates joint studies for Uniarts students. Sound Art & Sonic Arts (SAMA) is an interdisciplinary, joint minor studies module provided for master-level students of the Uniarts. The SAMA curriculum is planned jointly by the departments of Time and Space Arts (Academy of Fine Arts), Sound Design (Theatre Academy) and Music Technology (Sibelius Academy).

Duties

The main duties of the lecturer are teaching in Sound Art & Sonic Arts module SAMA and the planning of its curriculum in collaboration with the involved programmes and departments (Music Technology (Sibelius Academy), Sound Design (Theatre Academy) and Time and Space Arts (Academy of Fine Arts).

He or she will act as teacher-in-charge of SAMA, which includes pedagogical instruction and briefing of visiting and hourly teachers to SAMA, and the development of the study module and individual courses. Developmental work, course planning, the arrangement of courses, and study guidance will be executed in close collaboration with SAMA's coordinator.

In addition to group teaching in Sound Art, the assignment will also include individual tuition. The lecturer is required to participate actively in the SAMA steering committee, as well as the development of Uniarts Helsinki's joint education by active participation in planning seminars, and other forums as instructed by the SAMA committee.

The teaching emphasis of the lecturer will be on the side of Master-level tuition. SAMA is attended by students from all of the University of the Arts' academies. A sensitivity to the varied educational backgrounds of students who are attending SAMA is a necessary trait in the lecturer.

Selection criteria

We require that as a successful candidate you have the following merits

- Master's degree in an appropriate field
- practical experience in Sound Art and Sonic Arts
- experience of teaching on a University level, preferably in Sound Art or related fields (due to the demanding pedagogical responsibilities in this interdisciplinary field)
- pedagogical knowledge, experience from leading and development, especially within the field of education, and familiarity with the field of higher education in Finland or knowledge of other systems of higher education in Art is seen as a merit
- experience from varied and interdisciplinary fields of art is also valued
- applicants will also be assessed on their artistic qualifications

Aptitude

The successful candidate is required to possess a good knowledge of the current Sound Art field. Teaching experience and skills in addition to a real desire and ability to advance the joint study module are of utmost importance. The successful carrying out of the duties of lecturer also requires good organizational skills, good interpersonal skills and an aptitude for developing teaching collaboratively across the University of the Arts Helsinki.

Language proficiency

The language of teaching is English. The successful candidate will have an ability to fluently conduct group teaching and individual tuition in English.

Salary

The lecturer's salary is determined in accordance with the Finnish universities salary system. In addition to the job-specific salary, a personal salary component will be paid. At the start of the employment relationship, the job demand level is 5.
