Se on
The Talbot Arizona
About a car who was built and was very successful. You may better know it as the Peugeot 309, and many of you will be aware that for the majority of its production life, the familiar Simca 1118 cc and 1294 cc engines were used, with Peugeot engines providing the power for the larger engined models, including the very fast 1.9 GTI.
The 309 originated as Project C28 in 1981 and was planned to be a new model to replace both the Horizon and 1510 (Alpine in UK), and was naturally intended to be al Talbot. Visitors to the Paris Motor Show in 1982 saw a largely finished Arizona in the shape of the VERA Plus prototype. This incorporated the curved, all-glass rear hatch and rounded bonnet which were prominent feetures of the final 309.
As Talbot's market share in Europe declined during 1983 and 1984, the idea of calling the new car a Peugeot rather than a Talbot was proposed. The main disadvantage was that the new car was to be built in the UK as well as France, and it was feared that British fleet buyers would not buy a car with a French name. There also was not an obvious unused number for it in the Peugeot range; at that time the 305 was very popular, and if the new car was called a 306 it would have undermined demand for the 305. The debate about calling the car a Talbot or a Peugeot continued right into 1985, and was finally settled only a few months before the European launch that October. It was felt that the 309 name would distance it from the 305, and avoid damaging sales of the latter, and this proved to be the case.
A 309 with a Simca engine is both an entertaining and practical car. The handling is even better than a Simca 1000, the ride just as good, and they are now cheap to buy. So if you want an example of the final episode in the Simca story, now is the time to start looking. The Simca engines were replaced by Peugeot units from October 1991, so you can have a 1990s car if you wish. The car disappeared from the UK market in 1993, and was discontinued in France in the summer of 1994, so it had a fairly long production life by modern standards.

A new 309 is still available in India !!
Ihan mukava auto silti ajo-ominaisuuksiltaan.
