Suhotra Swami Leaves Sannyasa
ISKCON News
Suhotra Swami, a disciple of Srila Prabhupada and formerly an initiating guru, has expressed his wish to leave the sannyasa (renunicate) ashram.
In 2000, suffering from depression he resigned his managerial tasks and cut back his extensive preaching tour in order to concentrate on improving his spiritual practice.
More recently he has advised his disciples that he is no longer in a position to give proper guidance and has now decided to adopt a quieter life of research and writing as a vanaprastha. Traditionally a vanaprastha is one retired form householder life and approaching the greater austerity and rigour of a sannyasi (travelling mendicant).
Suhotra Swami, now officially Suhotra Dasa, was initiated by Srila Prabhupada in Boston in 1972 and took sannyasa initiation in the early 1980s. He was on the famed Library Party in the early 1970s along with Satsvarupa Dasa Goswami and Ghanasyama Dasa (now Bhakti-tirtha Swami) distributing Srila Prabhupada's books to college libraries. Suhotra Swami is also the author of several books including Substance and Shadow, Transcendental Personalism, and Beyond Good and Evil. He preached extensively in Eastern European countires including Bulgaria, Romania, and Poland and served one year as chairman of ISKCON's GBC (Governing Body Commission).
Suhotra Swami: "Srila Prabhupada once compared going back home, Back to Godhead, to flying an airplane. Sometimes, after it takes off, a plane is beset with mechanical problems. The pilot is obliged to turn back to the starting point and get the aircraft repaired. Thereafter he can resume the flight. Such will be my course in spiritual life now: to return to a new beginning so as to repair my damaged spiritual health through strictly supervised devotional service."

"sometimes a spiritual master is not properly authorised and only on his own initiative becomes a spiritual master, he may be carried away by an accumulation of wealth and a large number of disciples."
(NOD p.116)
Eli yllä oleva on Srila Prabhupadan (ISKCON:in perustaja acarya) kommentti "Antaumuksen Nektari" nimisestä kirjasta.
"Srila Prabhupada:
Try to understand. Don't go very speedily. A guru can become guru when he is ordered by his guru. That's all. Otherwise nobody can become guru."
(SP Bg. Lecture, 28/10/75)
"A bona fide spiritual master is in the disciplic succession from time eternal and he does not deviate at all from the instructions of the Supreme Lord."
(Bg.4.42, purport)
"There is no possibility that a first class devotee will fall down." (C.c. Madhya, 22.71)
'One should not become a spiritual master unless he has attained the platform of uttama-adhikari.' (The Nectar of Instruction, text 5, purport)
"Kenenkään ei pitäisi ruveta henkiseksi mestariksi, ellei hän ole saavuttanut uttama-adhikarin tasoa" (The Nectar of Instruction, text 5, purport)
Kaikki nuo lainaukset olivat ISKCON:in perustajan Srila Prabhupadan kirjoista. Suhotra Swami siis toimi täysin oman henkisen mestarinsa ohjeiden vastaisesti ruvetessaan diksa-guruksi. Sen vuoksi hän lankesi alas.
Toivotaan, että muutkin ISKCON-gurut jättävät pian tehtävänsä ja ohjaavat oppilaitaan seuraamaan ISKCON:in todellista gurua, joka on Srila Prabhupada, eikä kukaan muu.
Hare Krishna!
"Indian man: When did you become spiritual the leader of Krsna Consciousness?
Srila Prabhupada: What is that?
Brahmananda: He is asking when did you become the spiritual leader of Krsna Consciousness?
Srila Prabhupada: When my Guru Maharaja ordered me. This is the guru parampara.
Indian man: Did it...
Srila Prabhupada: Try to understand. Don't go very speedily. A guru can become guru when he is ordered by his guru. That's all. Otherwise nobody can become guru."
(SP Bg. Lecture, 28/10/75)
"It is best not to accept any disciples"(CC purport).
No onhan noita tuollaisia lainauksia vaikka muille jakaa.
http://www.vnn.org/editorials/ET9903/ET24-3403.html
"Keep trained up very rigidly and then you are bona fide guru, and you can accept disciples on the same principle. But as a matter of etiquette it is the custom that during the lifetime of your spiritual master you bring the prospective disciples to him, and in his absence or disappearance you can accept disciples without any limitation. This is the law of disciplic succession." (Srila Prabhupada's letter to Tusta Krsna Swami, 2nd December, 1975)
"Anyone following the order of Lord Caitanya under the guidance of His bona fide representative can become a spiritual master and I wish that in my absence all my disciples become the bona fide spiritual master to spread Krsna Consciousness throughout the whole world." (SPL to Madhusudana, 2nd November, 1967)
"I want that all of my spiritual sons and daughters will inherit this title of Bhaktivedanta, so that the family transcendental diploma will continue through the generations. Those possessing the title of Bhaktivedanta will be allowed to initiate disciples. Maybe by 1975 all of my disciples will be allowed to initiate and increase the number of generations. That is my program." (SPL to Hansadutta, 3rd December, 1968)
Ja niin etiäppäin...
SP myös kirjoitti Tusta Krshnalle seuraavat kirjeet:
"Do not try to make a faction." (SPL to Tusta Krsna, 72-12-14)
"I have heard that you are having some difficulties [...] Of course, our serving Krishna is voluntary affair, so what can I say? If you think that is the best choice, I must agree, otherwise you might go away altogether." (SPL to Tusta Krsna, 72-12-14)
"News has come to me that you want to sell our temple to somebody else which I cannot believe. Even that you have been in charge of the New Zealand centre, now you have taken it as your personal property and you have demanded from Madhudvisa Swami the price of the temple. This is all amazing to me. I do not know what is your decision. Tusta Krsna has already left and is in Hawaii with Siddha Svarupananda Maharaja. I never believed that again you would go back to your old habits, giving up the Krishna Consciousness Movement in a whimsical way. Please do not do this mistake [...] Now all of a sudden you have changed that program and taken to your original ways? I am so much aggrieved to receive all this news. For Krsna's sake, do not do these things. I request Tusta Krsna to go back to New Zealand and take charge of your duties. Please do not leave Krsna. You will not be happy. That is my request."
(SPL to Tusta Krsna and Beharilal, 73-10-15)
"I may inform you that I have today sent the following cable to Tusta Krsna Maharaja:'DO NOT SELL NEW ZEALAND TEMPLE TO OTHERS. IF YOU WANT MONEY I SHALL PAY TO YOU. REST ASSURED - BHAKTIVEDANTA SWAMI.' "
(SPL to Madhudvisa, 73-10-22)
"I have not heard from Tusta Krsna or Siddha-Svarupa Goswamis nor do I know anything of their plans to return to New Zealand. Try to convince them to return to our Society and work co-operatively. That they have gone away is not good thing and it is a deviation from our line of parampara. Rather, avoiding faultfinding and anarchy, they should keep our standard and work maturely and not cause factions and splitting. I am not at all pleased at what they have done."
(SPL to Madhudvisa, 73-12-15)
"So far I have studied Siddhasvarupa, he is not a bad boy, but he has his own philosophy, from the very beginning."
(SPL to Paramahamsa, 75-07-16) (All emphasis added)
Please note that Tusta Krsna was a follower of Siddhasvarupa who already had disciples even whilst Srila Prabhupada was present. Taking all the above into account it is clear that the above private letter (quote number 10) is simply urging an ambitious deviant disciple to at least wait until the spiritual master has left the planet before taking his own disciples. That some devotees would seek to promote this letter as generally applicable beggars belief.
This cannot be used to replace, supplant or modify the July 9th policy document since the recipients of that directive would not necessarily even have known of the existence of the above letter. We offer further reasons below as to why this evidence also fails to support T.O.'s thesis, in and of itself:
There is absolutely no mention of the term diksa, nor the word `initiate' in the above quote, and hence it cannot be asserted to have any direct bearing on the future of diksa initiation within ISKCON.
As explained previously, (bullet points under quote 2), the mention of absence does not have to refer to diksa, it can also refer to siksa. Therefore it is not conclusive that Srila Prabhupada must be writing about diksa here.
The point that Srila Prabhupada must mean diksa since his disciples were already acting as siksa is answered in the following:
`All my disciples' could mean, including `all those who are yet to come'.
The statement could be encouraging his disciples to become proficient at giving proper instruction. At that time his disciples were very new to spiritual life, and hence there was plenty of room for them to improve in their performance as siksa spiritual masters and become bona fide representatives of the initiating acarya. This was a process Srila Prabhupada wanted continued in his absence.
There are different grades of siksa, from vartma-pradasaka on up to a fully liberated souls. All can still be siksa gurus. Obviously the more pure they become the more effective instructing spiritual masters they will make.
If we take the above GBC assertion literally, then it would mean that every time Srila Prabhupada used the term `guru', he must always be referring to diksa, since his disciples were always already acting as siksa. But this premise must be wrong since there are many quotes where Srila Prabhupada is clearly ordering his disciples to become guru straight away, even in his presence. We know that in those circumstances he was definitely talking about siksa, so why not in quote number 6?
Koko tuo VNN:n juttu, mihin viittasit on systemaattisesti kumottu osoitteessa: http://www.iskconirm.com/best.htm
Kopioitu osoitteesta: http://www.pratyatosa.com/BottomLineOnGuruTattva.htm
The bottom line of the [ISKCON guru] issue is whether or not any guru is subjected to the dictates and discipline of the GBC. The fact that Prabhupada established the GBC as the Governing Authority for ISKCON rules out the possibility of any diksha gurus in ISKCON except him. Prabhupada ruled out the diksha guru system in ISKCON by saying that a bona-fide spiritual master is never subjected to the discipline or restrictions of a GBC or anyone else. The fact that the GBC is in the position of having to regulate and restrict the activities of the ISKCON gurus shows that indeed there can be no gurus in ISKCON except Prabhupada. A real guru is never subjected to the control and discipline of any committee, Godbrother, disciple or anyone else. Sri Guru is a free agent independent of committee regulation or control. ISKCON clearly has a whole set of rules and laws that regulate, discipline and restrict all the diksha gurus in ISKCON. This situation is clearly in violation of the teachings of Srila Prabhupada. We find his instructions in the matter in the Nectar of Instruction text 6 purport:
It is also an offense to consider an empowered Vaishnava an object of disciplinary action. It is offensive to try to give him advice or to correct him...The spiritual master must not be subjected to the advice of a disciple, nor should a spiritual master be obliged to take instructions from those who are not his disciples. This is the sum and substance of Srila Rupa Goswami’s advice in this sixth verse.
Srila Prabhupada is saying here that in the Rupanuga sampradaya a spiritual master should not be subjected to the discipline or regulations of any committee, individual or group of individuals. A real spiritual master is not subject to such regulation.
Therefore, by establishing the GBC as the managing authority of ISKCON, Srila Prabhupada ruled out the possibility of a multiplicity of gurus in ISKCON by making the GBC the functioning authority over all ISKCON affairs. In ISKCON today there is a class of spiritual masters who are all subjected to the regulation and discipline of the GBC. This is totally incongruent with the concept of a traditional spiritual master who is above and beyond all such committee regulation.
Prabhupada said it is an offense to try and discipline or regulate a spiritual master. Therefore either the regulating of ISKCON spiritual masters by the GBC must stop or [the ISKCON] diksha guru system must stop. Refusing to do so results in offenses which will destroy devotional service and make [devotional service] fruitless and futile.
Madhudvisa: Is there any way for a Christian to, without the help of a Spiritual Master, to reach the spiritual sky through believing the words of Jesus Christ and trying to follow his teachings?
Srila Prabhupada: I don't follow.
Tamal Krsna Goswami: Can a Christian in this age, without a Spiritual Master, but by reading the Bible, and following Jesus's words, reach the...
Srila Prabhupada: When you read the Bible, you follow Spiritual Master. How can you say without? As soon as you read the Bible, that means you are following the instruction of Lord Jesus Christ, that means that you are following Spiritual Master. So where is the opportunity of being without Spiritual Master?
Madhudvisa: I was referring to a living Spiritual Master.
Srila Prabhupada: Spiritual Master is not question of...Spiritual Master is eternal. Spiritual Master is eternal...So your question is 'without Spiritual Master'. Without Spiritual Master you cannot be at any stage of your life. You may accept this Spiritual Master or that Spiritual Master. That is a different thing. But you have to accept. As you say that "by reading Bible", when you read Bible that means you are following the Spiritual Master represented by some priest or some clergyman in the line of Lord Jesus Christ.
(SP Morning walk, 2/10/68, Seattle)
"So we should associate by vibration, and not by the physical presence. That is real association."
(Lectures SB, 68/08/18)
"There are two conceptions, the physical conception and the vibrational conception. The physical conception is temporary. The vibrational conception is eternal.[...] When we feel separation from Krsna or the Spirirual Master, we should just try to remember their words or instructions, and we will no longer feel that separation. Such association with Krsna and the Spiritual Master should be association by vibration not physical presence. That is real association. "
(Elevation to Krsna Consciousness, (BBT 1973), Page 57)
"Although according to material vision His Divine Grace Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarsavati Thakura Prabhupada passed away from this material world on the last day of December 1936, I still consider his Divine Grace to be always present with me by his vani, his words. There are two ways of association - by vani and by vapuh. Vani means words and vapuh means physical presence. Physical presence is sometimes appreciable and sometimes not, but Vani continues to exist eternally. Therefore, one must take advantage of the Vani, not the physical presence."
(CC, Antya 5 Conclusion)
"Srimad Viraraghava Acarya, an acarya in the disciplic succession of the Ramanuja-sampradaya, has remarked in his commentary that candalas, or conditioned souls who are born in lower than sudra families, can also be initiated according to circumstances. The formalities may be slightly changed here and there to make them Vaisnavas."
(S.B. 4.8.5, purport)

Eivät ne ainakaan itselleni ole yhtään epäselviä. En myöskään ole löytänyt niistä yhtäkään ristiriitaa. En myöskään ymmärrä miten niitä voitaisiin selittää monella eri tavalla? Voisitko antaa jonkun esimerkin?
Devotee:
Srila Prabhupada when you're not present with us, how is it possible to receive instructions? For example in questions that may arise...
Srila Prabhupada:
Well the questions are answ...answers are there in my books.
(Morning Walk, Los Angeles, 13/5/73)
So utilise whatever time you find to make a thorough study of my books. Then all your questions will be answered.
(Letter to Upendra, 7/1/76)
Paramahamsa:
My question is, a pure devotee, when he comments on Bhagavad Gita, someone who never sees him physically, but he just comes in contact with the commentary, explanation, is this the same thing?
Srila Prabhupada:
Yes. You can associate with Krsna by reading Bhagavad-Gita. And these saintly persons, they have given their explanations, comments. So where is the difficulty?
(Morning Walk, Paris 11/6/74)

1. Bhaktisiddhanta hyväksyi sannyasan, eli sahrami-kaapuun pukeutuvan munkin, statuksen oman gurunsa valokuvan edessä seremonian suorittaen, siinä missä tällainen munkkisvihkimys on tapana saada toiselta munkilta.
Tämän lisäksi, vaikka gurun kuuluisi antaa oppilailleen omalta gurultaan saamansa mantrat, eri Bhaktisiddhantan oppilaiden keskuudessa annetaan hieman erilaisia mantroja. Esimerkiksi ISKCON:issa annettavat mantrat eroavat hieman mantroista, joita Bhaktivedantan munkiksi vihkinyt guru antoi omille oppilailleen. Sitten taas B.R. Sridharan, Bhaktivedantan munkki-gurun munkiksi vihkinyt munkki, oppilaiden keskuudessa toistetaan taas erilaista mantraa.
Kaikki vaan kertovat oman versionsa yhtään edes vaivautumatta tutkimaan asian juuria.
:). Koska tällainen tarve voi ilmaantua. Oman gurusi kuoltua vai jo aikaisemminkin? ###
No ei nyt varsinaisesti ihan noin. :)
" Sadhu sastra guru-vakya, tinete kariya aikya. Sastra is never changed. And the sadhu... sadhu means who follows the sastras. He is sadhu. He also does not change. Sadhu, sastra and guru? Guru means who follows the sastra and sadhu. So there are three, the same."
(S.P. Lecture 30/11/76,Vrindavana)
Tai vielä selkeämmin koko homma on selvitetty "Back to Prabhupada"-lehdessä, jonka voit tilata ilmaiseksi samasta osoitteesta.
Onnea vain Madhavalla taipaleelle Guruksi! Meinaan tuosta saa täysin sellaisen kuvan, että etsit jo oppilaita itsellesi. :D
No, mikäs siinä.
