Automotive News Europe claimed yesterday that "Fiat Auto is relying on registrations of unsold cars by dealers to inflate its market share", quoting sources within the company and Fiat dealer officials.
The report says that cars registered by dealers in Italy, which do not have buyers, are then exported as new cars to other European countries, particularly Germany, where they are then registered a second or even third time. This practice, known as "double-counting", helps to create the impression that Fiat still holds a large share in its home market, and the cars most likely to be "double counted" are the Punto, Stilo and some Alfa Romeo models. A company survey across Europe last year is said to have found that some 100,000 out of 380,000 cars in stock at dealers were pre-registered, or "zero-kilometre" vehicles.
