Jaguar has been out and about testing the S-Type R on UK roads, as it gets ready to unveil it at the Detroit Motor Show next month. Targeted at BMW M5 buyers, this car gives Jaguar - and indeed, the entire Ford Premier Automotive Group - a serious performance saloon to take on the German car makers.
The S-Type R will be distinguished from other S- Types by its mesh grille (which has the Jaguar badge now integrated at the top, rather than placed on the bonnet) different wheels, lower and stiffer suspension, twin exhausts and discreet rear boot spoiler. Most importantly, however, it is likely to produce around 400 bhp and 370 lb ft torque from a supercharged version of Jaguar's V8 engine, which is to be enlarged from 4.0 to 4.2 litres. This is thought to bring 0-60 mph acceleration times down to less than five seconds, and top speed up to about 160 mph. This engine will be teamed with a new ZF automatic six-speed gearbox; no manual alternative will be offered.
Equipment will include DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) and Jaguar's CATS adaptive suspension; expect a cabin finished to a luxury specification. Although prices will not be announced until nearer the on-sale date in April 2002, they are set to start at less than £50,000, which will undercut both the M5 and the new Mercedes E55 AMG.

Eikö noi fordin paskahousut osaa muuta kuin
kopioida!!! Ensin kopataan uudet muotoilut
civic:stä focukseen 90-luvun puolessavälissä ja
nyt toi "Type-R" merkintä jossain

Noh, tuo merkintä sattuu olemaan Hondan
yksinoikeus, eli taitaa jäädä aika hiljaiseksi
tuon Type-R merkinnän käyttö ja
urheiluautomaineen hyödyntäminen jaguarmondeolta.

aikaisemminkin! Ja mitä vitun välii Type-R ja S-
type R ovat aika eri luokassa :)
Mutta oli sitten pakko laittaa automaattiloota
siihen jaggeen, siitä tulee samanlainen pappa
raaseri kuin joku T6:kin, tosin tehokkaampi!
Papparaaseriko? Kuka nyt tuon hintaisessa ja
tyylisessä autossa jaksaisi koskea vaihdekeppiin?
Jotain rajaa noihin juttuihin. Jopa Porscheen ja
Ferrariin saa automaatin, eikä ne ole yhtään

Toivottavasti et ikinä osta mitään urheilua-autoa mikäli luulet että niihin kuuluu tomaattilaatikko!! C 32 AMG ainoo automaatti millä voisi ihan pakosta ajaa, mutta koitapa ajaa kovaa jollain Volvo T6:lla, ei oo hauskaa! Ja nyt en takoita että ajettaisiin suorilla!
Kalkkis taidat olla itse jos olet niin väsyny jätkä että haluat johonkin sporttiautoon automaatin! Mutta kaikilla suodaan toki oma mielipide!
Kuten sanottiin top gear ohjelmassa kun herrat kokeili Porsche 911 Turboa: "Saahan tähän tiptronicin mutta mitä sillä tekee kun kutos vaihteella voi ajaa 20-190mph" :)
