The court convicted Veli-Matti Huohvanainen, 31, of three counts of murder, as well as deprivation of freedom, and hostage taking, and sentenced him to life in prison.

The series of events began in September 1999 in an office in Vantaa and concluded in Hauho, more than 100 kilometres north of Helsinki, where Huohvanainen stabbed his last victim, a Swedish citizen.

Before that, he had shot two other men in Vantaa in a confused state of mind. However, a psychiatric examination concluded that Huohvanainen had acted in full mental capacity. The defence had claimed that he had been under severe stress.

The life sentence means that Huohvanainen will have to spend a long time in prison, by Finnish standards. Even in cases involving fewer victims, a life sentence means that at least 12 years would have to be served. A life sentence can be commuted only through a presidential pardon.

Huohvanainen's older brother Olli Pekka Huohvanainen, 39, was acquitted of murder charges and sentenced to two years and seven months for attempted murder and two counts of assault. As it was his first offence, and with time served, he should go free at the beginning of the new year.

The first of the victims had arrived at the office run by the two brothers to get a new battery for his mobile telephone, when Veli-Matti Huohvanainen unexpectedly shot him in the head. Olli Pekka Huohvanainen could not bear to watch the death throes of his friend and shot him with a pistol.

The court found that Olli Pekka had acted under duress, intimidated by his younger brother who was waving a gun. Forensic doctors testified that they could not say for sure if the man had still been alive when Olli Pekka Huohvanainen shot him.

Meanwhile, Veli-Matti had been in a very confused state of mind throughout the evening and the following night. He had claimed that killers had been sent after him, and talked about the mafia, and the Winter War. He apparently believed that his victims had been out to get him.

Veli-Matti shot the second victim in the head after he had been tortured by Veli-Matti, Olli Pekka and a third man, Jukka Petteri Huovinen. The court found that the two had acted under duress, threatened by Veli-Matti.

Huovinen was sentenced to four months for assault. He is already serving time for another crime.

In addition to the life sentence, Veli-Matti Huohvanainen was ordered to pay compensations totalling well over half a million markka to family members of the victims, and three people who had been taken hostage. However, it is uncertain if any of the compensatory damages will be paid, as Huohvanainen has declared himself indigent.

Tight security was in place at the court, and no incidents occurred. Veli-Matti Huohvanainen did not appear surprised when the life sentence was handed down.
