Saab celebrates 15-years of convertible
manufacturing with a special model
Saab 9-3 SE Design Edition Convertible
In Europe, every third buyer of a convertible in
the premium segment chooses a Saab 9-3
Convertible. In Great Britain, Sweden, the
Netherlands and Belgium, the Saab share of the
market for premium convertibles is more than 50
percent. This year is the 15th anniversary of the
top being folded down on the first Saab
Convertible. Today, more than 150 000
Convertibles later, Saab is unquestionably the
true convertible specialist in the premium
segment. To mark the 15th anniversary
celebrations, Saab is now presenting the latest
in the succession of open top
cars - the Saab 9-3 SE Design Edition
Convertible.

The Saab 9-3 SE Design Edition Convertible is a
special version of the Saab 9-3 Convertible that
is being produced in a limited run for customers
who want their convertible to be even more
distinctive. The interior of the Design Edition
is characterized by a titanium grey dashboard,
charcoal grey leather upholstery with blue
inlays, and matt-chrome door handles. The door
trim and the carpets are also special versions
for the Design Edition to match the seat
upholstery. The steering wheel rim is trimmed
with perforated leather and is provided with
finger indents for a firm grip.

The Design Edition Convertible is equipped with
mountings for the wind deflector available from
the Saab range of accessories. The wind deflector
is designed for mounting behind the front seats
and effectively reduces the draughts in the
interior.
Three bodywork colours are available - Steel
Grey, Silver and Black. A unique feature of the
Design Edition is that the windscreen frame is
finished in the same colour as the bodywork. To
ensure optimum grip, 7.5 x 17-inch five-spoke
light alloy wheels are standard, and the standard
equipment also includes an aerodynamic spoiler
set consisting of a bodywork colour-matched front
spoiler, rear bumper skirt and side skirts.

The Saab 9-3 SE Design Edition Convertible is
powered by one of two 2.0-litre turbo engines.
The light pressure turbo engine develops 150 bhp
and offers brisk mid-range performance for fast,
safe overtaking, while the 185 bhp full turbo
unit gives the verve of the classic turbo engine.
Just like all Saab 9-3 Convertibles, the Saab 9-3
SE Design Edition combines driving enjoyment and
sportiness with practicality for year-round
motoring enjoyment. The back seat can accommodate
two adults, the luggage compartment has volume of
up to 378 litres and is provided with a ski
hatch, the top is of three-layer construction for
all-season weatherproofing, and electric heating
is provided for the front seats and rear window.

Fifteen years ago this year, Saab launched its
first convertible, which became an immediate
success. The first limited run of 400 cars
produced in the spring of 1986 for the U.S.
market sold so quickly that most prospective
buyers did not even realize that sales of the car
had begun. The 1987 model was sold out long
before its production had started, and 1989
models were being ordered way back in 1986!

During the year 2000, Saab sold 18 741
convertibles, which represents 14 percent of
total Saab sales. Saab has a 30 percent share of
the European premium convertible market (which,
in addition to the Saab 9-3 Convertible, also
includes the convertible versions of the BMW 3-
series, the Audi and the Volvo). Excluding the
German domestic market of BMW and Audi, Saab's
European market share is 43 percent. In Great
Britain, Sweden, Denmark, Greece, Ireland,
Belgium and the Netherlands, the Saab 9-3
Convertible has more than half the market for
premium convertibles.
