Saab is working on a potential rival to the BMW M3. This is set to have over 300 bhp from a version of the 3.0 V6 engine, fully tuned suspension and uncompromising sporting handling characteristics - and four-wheel drive, finally addressing the problem Saab has always had with its high-performance vehicles, that of channelling huge amounts of turbo-charged power and torque via the front wheels. It will only be made in limited numbers, and is intended to be more of a 'halo' model for the rest of the range, emphasising Saab's intentions to become known for its driver's cars again, than a big-selling profit-spinner.

An even broader audience will be attracted to the range once more variants are launched; the all-new Convertible is scheduled for next summer, and also on the way are a compact coupe/hatch to take on the Mercedes C-Class Sport Coupe and BMW Compact, a 'combi' estate to rival the 3-Series Touring and C-Class estate, and, further into the future, a small 4x4 (BMW X3 rival) and a cross-over vehicle influenced by the 9-3 X concept car.
