I've always loved nature and have made time in the past few years to re-kindle this passion by hiking in the wild and sleeping in cabins..This summer I decided to try tenting it ...despite my middle aged back :) Anyway...it came to mind... Is it wise to leave food supplies outside one's tent to avoid unwanted guests such as bears coming in for a snack? Or am I over-reacting??
food inside or outside my tent?

No reason at all to leave your food outside.
Mice could be the only animals interesed of your food.
I have wandered years in Lappland and in western Finnland, and I think there are no reason to leave your food supplies outside your tent. In case you are going to, lets say, to Kainuu or such places where you MAYBE can be able to see a bear, I don`t suggest that you take raw meat or such with you. But myself, I carry only dried products and bred and such with me, and i think that no bear would like to eat them. Maybe some very friendly birds or foxes will try to catch your trashes(food wastes) if there is easy acces to them.
...would be heavy to take with!
- I feel fortunate to have seen bears a few times in Finnish Lapland, from far.
Mice and fox are more problematic, especially near cottages, where people leave foodstoff on open air.
In spite of those, I use to storage food well packed in abside with fishing equipment and boots.
Have nice wanderings!

Thank you all for the info...next week I'm off to enjoy the Pallas Heta route in beautiful Lapland...bears shouldn't be a problem :)
