Hermione Granger was running for her life.
She was fully aware the concept was clichéd; however, it didn't stop her from living it. Running for my life, I'm running for my life... Gods! Would she die with such prattle in her head?
Her legs burned as she sprinted up the steep, forested incline, listening for her pursuers. It was difficult; the blood pounding in her head and oxygen debt made it nearly impossible for her to concentrate. Everything else fell away before- running for my life, running for my everfucking life...
As she burst upon the clearing, her muscles seized up in white-hot agony. Damn! Didn't hear the curse... She fell heavily to the ground; hands cramped into claws, jaw locked. Her last thought - not fast enough! - flew away, leaving her with only mindless, burning anguish. She couldn't breathe. She felt herself slipping away when suddenly the curse was lifted. Still wracked with pain, her muscles clenching and hopping, seeming to want freedom from the safety of her skin, she managed to roll onto her back.
A sharp twig poked into her back as she listened to the approaching footsteps. Slim light from a wand-tip appeared first, followed by a figure she saw only in silhouette. She shut her eyes against the glare and waited for the blow to fall.
Instead of another curse, Hermione heard only soft, mocking laughter. "Well, Granger. Where are your friends now?" She felt his breath on her face- he smelt of mint with a slight undertone of something more primal.
She managed to open her eyes again and stared directly into the eyes of Draco Malfoy. "Safe from the likes of you," she spat. Without thinking, she darted her head upward, smashing Malfoy's nose with her forehead. Now, that will leave a mark... Not that it mattered. If she lived through tonight, the least of her worries would be explaining away black eyes.
"Bitch!" Malfoy hissed, one hand springing to his nose. She was insanely gratified to see it had already begun to swell, thin rills of blood issuing from his nostrils. Burning hate sprung into his eyes. "You'll pay for that, Mudblood!" She felt another pinprick of gratification as he choked and gagged on the blood in his throat.
She saw movement at the edges of her vision, but it seemed she no longer had control of her neck. She was unable to turn her head. Such movement was soon proven unnecessary as Crabbe and Goyle sidled in on either side of Malfoy.
"Do 'er like t'others?" This incoherency issued from Crabbe.
With a quick shake of the head, Malfoy snapped, "No. You know the plan. I've more...experimental things in mind for this one..." The hateful smirk settled on his face again as he watched Crabbe and Goyle jerk her roughly upright by the arms. He wiped his nose slowly on the back of his sleeve, smearing the blood around his mouth rather than wiping it away.
Hermione's head spun with the movement. A large, clumsy hand seized her collar and pulled her robe and pack from her in one foul snatch. Well, that's something, she thought, least I'm not stripped bare... Crabbe and Goyle backed her up against a tree; her shirt rode up and the rough tree bark scraped her back. Malfoy again pointed his wand at her. She steeled for the blow, then merely gaped as ropes erupted from his wand instead of green fire.
The ropes snaked around her hands, binding her arms behind her around the trunk of the tree. He bound her feet in much the same fashion, finishing with one last rope around her waist. Malfoy chuckled as she strained against the cords.
"Don't want to leave already, do you Granger?" he drawled, a dangerous glint in his eye. Hermione's earlier optimism evaporated. "Not when the party's just getting started."
As Malfoy stepped nearer to her, Crabbe and Goyle perched on a nearby log, looking for all the world like two kids settling down to watch a particularly heated Quidditch match. Her gaze snapped back to Malfoy as he twitched his wand at her. "Crucio!" he cried, attacking her anew.
Her body cramped back upon itself. She hazily noticed a tiny red beam; then a huge, sizzling pain burned up her right arm like a brand. Her sleeve fell away, stripped cleanly as if it had been done with a laser. A large, angry welt was raised along the path of the red beam. The edges of the wound curled back, weeping blood. She gasped in pain, fighting for awareness through the agony of the curse and looked up into Malfoy's sadistic face.
Her pain seemed to change the look in his eyes from one of sadism to one of... was it desire? She involuntarily dropped her gaze and recognized the bulge tenting the front of his trousers with something like insanity. She shuddered, gorge rising in her throat. He chuckled again and lazily massaged his crotch, then slowly trailed the hateful beam along her left arm. That sleeve also fell away before it. He adopted an expression of absent concentration and settled down to work.
Sizzle, sizzle, there went the legs of her ordinary, Muggle jeans. Another sizzle, another hot brand, this one across her middle. Another one, from her neck to her waist, splitting her shirt and bra down the front. Her head dropped as her shirt fell away; she was already half-unconscious from enduring this unspeakable... violation. Two more zaps in quick succession stripped her of the rest of her jeans. She felt the angry crackle following the line of her panties- he was toying with her now. Outline achieved, Malfoy divested her of those with two more quick jabs of his wand.
Feeling oddly grateful to be finally nude, Hermione lifted her eyes to the malicious face before her. Malfoy had been strangely silent since his work had begun in earnest; she almost wished he would say something. It would humanize him; make him seem less like an especially cruel demon. Her eyes again drooped as her brain tried to fly away to safer, saner territory. She was brought abruptly back to reality by a nasty pinch at her left nipple. Malfoy let go of her with a twist, and again raised his wand.
"Crucio!" he cried again, and her mind reeled away. This pain was forever, it was an eternity, infinite... Then, blessed release. Consciousness cautiously creeping back in, horrified at her mind's insistence on awareness, Hermione tried to raise her eyes. Only one seemed under her control, and she met Malfoy's hungry gaze.
Hermione watched in detached horror as the red beam pierced the night again. Malfoy blazed runes across her stomach and upper thighs. After each mark, he touched his fingers to it and whispered. Hermione didn't understand the spell, but she kenned its purpose; as he touched each wound, the edges peeled back, black, and runners of pain seemed to radiate into her body. She slipped away again, running backward in her mind, searching for some place to lock herself away from the pain and humiliation and shame...
Malfoy looked up, rousing himself from his concentration as her eyes clouded over. "Pity," he murmured. "You lasted much longer than I expected... No matter." He pointed his wand fully at her and sighed "Ennervate" with the dedication of a lover.
Hermione felt a distinct thud as she was pulled back into reality. Malfoy now played the malevolent imp. Worst of all, she saw consciousness in his gaze, understanding of what he was doing, and what it meant.
He alternated Cruciatus with whatever that red beam was... Hermione had never felt such pain. She would rather have gouged out her eyes with a hot poker. She prayed for death. She shrieked until her voice broke, then stared into the sky, her mouth wide in a silent scream. The tendons and veins in her neck bulged; her head tilted back still further. Her eyes caught a bright spark in the distance of the night sky...Mars! She caught that image, focused her entire being into it, and felt her mind sweep upward, outward...
"Inconvenient, weak bitch!" Malfoy pouted, as her eyes again rolled back into her head. He raised his wand, then whipped around at a bawling yell from behind. He turned in time to see Crabbe and Goyle spilled off the log by something large and decidedly not-human. "Lumos," he demanded, raising his wand above his head to spread the light.
The Centaur leapt fully into the clearing. He reared up on his hindquarters, flailing his front legs at the pale form before him.
Malfoy finally recognized the interloper as a Centaur. He lazily turned his wand to it and said, "Avada..." A hoof connected with his temple, abbreviating the killing curse. He slumped to the ground in an uncharacteristically graceless heap.
The Centaur turned to face the two others, to find they had already fled. "Just as well," he murmured, gazing longingly skyward for a moment. "Mars is bright tonight." He turned to Hermione. He untied her, catching her as she slumped toward the ground. He wrapped her in her discarded cloak, careful to avoid touching any of her grotesque wounds. He gently draped her across his back and picked up her pack.
"Firenze!" Bane admonished as he entered the clearing. Firenze turned to the older Centaur, who continued his scolding. "How many times must you be told that we do not intervene on behalf of humans? And - will you never grow tired of playing the common pack mule?"
Firenze's eyes flashed. "Should I have let them kill her? This was more than mere torture. It was one of their rituals. If we allow such... atrocities to continue, there will be no sanctuary left for anyone, including us."
Bane had the dignity to look somewhat abashed as he finally noticed both the state of undress and physical condition of Firenze's passenger. Still, he made as if to argue, then looked skyward and said simply, "Mars is bright tonight."
Firenze nodded in satisfaction. Bane could usually be brought to sanity, even with regard to humans. Reminders of the threat to his own skin were also helpful.
"Bane, I must take this female to Hagrid. She's one of Dumbledore's, if you recall." Firenze made for the edge of the clearing. He looked back, catching Bane still staring into the heavens. "Before you leave, break that demon's wand." Bane looked in disgust at the crumpled figure. Firenze turned to enter the forest, then hesitated, looking back over his shoulder.
"And his arms."
