This is a valid question. Do I care? Honestly I don’t believe that DNF will ever come out. The “witty” answer “When it’s ready” stopped being witty and became down right insulting and insolent 7 years ago and right now DNF is an embarrassment and a joke gone much too far. I feel personally offended by 3D Realms attitude in this matter and very annoyed by the “loyal followers” still defending this project.
Do I sound angry and bitter? Good - that’s because I am. I truly loved DN3D for its humor, excellent game play, very different main character and brilliant weapons some of which we haven’t seen in other games even though it’s 2006 already. DN3D was in many ways to me a revelation and the one reason to move from Amiga 500 to PC.
There are two other problems with DNF though (and many more I just don’t care to mention here).
1. I’m not sure if it would be possible to publish a game with the attitude of the original in today’s moral atmosphere. Yes, I know they did GTA but still… the sexism of the DN3D was quite blatant . I don’t mean to say that it was the reason why the game was so good but the almost anarchist attitude of the main char was to me very attractive.
2. Right now the big thing is online gaming and MMORPG. I don’t see the possibility of DNF coming such a phenomena as DN3D was. This goes for all FPS shooters and all stand alone games. Yes you can do death match but unless there is something totally new it’s just another FPS game.
I do disagree with your idea that only 25% of gamers back in 1997 are still playing games. That’s like saying that when you reach 35 you stop watching TV and move back to the good old radio. I’ve been playing computer games since 1984 and I do believe I’ll be playing them in 2014 if I’m still around. Computer games are the form of entertainment my generation grew up with. I admit that back in 1984 computer gaming was rarer than now but we are still here and we make out probably the most demanding group of consumers. We know our history and we have seen it from the beginning.
Would I be glad if DNF would come out in some alternative reality? Yes I would. Would I buy it? Maybe, if Duke is still there. Do I consider 3D Realms attitude towards the consumer in this case to be proper? No.
