From their schooldays onwards, Arabs are instructed that they should not defy tradition, that they should respect authority, that truth should be sought in the text and not in experience. Fear of fauda (chaos) and fitna (schism) are deeply engrained in much Arab-Islamic teaching. True democracy is absent and desperately needed. Most of the time human rights are no more than a poster hung in sham councils and organisations. The educational system is severely retarded; schools produce ignorant young men and women who excel in rote memorisation more than educated innovators. Most intellectuals, even if they deny it, realise that most of what was said in the most recent Arab Human Development Report is true.

valtion uskonnoksi. Islam jarruttaa kehitystä, koska se ei salli vapaata ajattelua, kyselyitä ja epäilyjä. Kaikki pitää vaan uskoa, mitä ennenkin on uskottu. Hallitukset ja vallanpitäjät eivät rohkaise
kansaa hankkimaan sivistystä. Siitä seuraisi, että he menettäisivät valtansa ja ylelliset palatsinsa.
Kansalla ei ole paljon toivoa. Parannusta ei tule ehkä koskaan.

Kohta näemme kun irakilaiset ajavat miehittäjän maastaan pois, käyvät juhlan kunniaksi kunnon sisällissodan ja sen jälkeen pystyttävät jälleen jonkunlaisen diktatuurin, löydettyään Saddamin korvaajan.
Mikään ei muutu ja kansan kärsimykset senkun jatkuvat. Öljynvienti loppuu tietenkin myös, mutta vain lyhyehköksi ajaksi, koska pitäähän maalla tuloja olla.

Tuostakin raportista selvisi, että islamin uskonto on ongelmien ratkaisuja vaikeuttava tekijä. Noilla mailla tuskin ongelmia olisikaan, jos niillä ei olisi islamin uskontoa. Uskontonsa vuoksi eivät palestiinalaiset ja israelilaiset voi tehdä rauhaa. Jatkuva kahakointi vaikeuttaa elämää, mutta he kärsivät ennemmin kuin suostuvat elämään rauhassa.
Irakilaiset olisivat jo ajat sitten päässeet rauhaan ilman uskonnon tekemää jakoa shiioihin ja sunneihin.
Koska uskonto ei jousta yhtään, parannuksia ei ole näkyvissä.
