Did Elvis really eat more than an Asian elephant does?

Tom Leonard reports in the newspaper on the 1,500 calorie Craz-E Burger – a bacon cheeseburger with a buttered, grilled and glazed doughnut instead a bun – that customers were devouring at a Massachusetts country fair.

I can think of at least two sandwiches that are more disgusting-sounding than the Craz-E. The first is the KFC Double Down chicken sandwich (not available in Britain) to which my attention was drawn in the summer by the excellent foodgeekery website.

The Double Down is basically a bread-less sandwich in which fried chicken patties replace the bread. In the middle you get two slices of cheese – Pepper Jack and Swiss – and two slices of bacon and the Colonel’s sauce, with a fried chicken patty on either side.

Not everyone thinks this is disgusting and a new low for fast food. Someone called Rob leaves a comment with the foodgeekery site saying he has just tried a Double Down: “WOW…is it good. Chicken, bacon, pepper jack cheese, and the 'special sauce' made for a damn fine sandwich. And yes, there is no bun, but it is wrapped in a paper sleeve which helps in eating the thing."

The second super-sized sandwich that comes to mind is the Fool’s Gold Loaf made famous by Elvis Presley. It is the ne plus ultra of calorific sandwiches. Invented by the Colorado Mine Company restaurant in Denver, it’s made out of a hollowed-out loaf or French stick, warmed and filled with a jar of creamy peanut butter such as Skippy, a jar of grape jelly (Smuckers) and a pound of crisp friend bacon (Elvis’s favourite bacon was said to be King Cotton brand).

A well-known story is told as an illustration of Elvis’s capriciousness. On February 1, 1976, Elvis and some friends who were visiting Graceland climbed aboard his private jet, the Lisa Marie, in the middle of the night and flew from Memphis to Denver, where they took delivery of 22 of the sandwiches. They apparently ate them without leaving the airport.

The Fool’s Gold Loaf has been reported to contain as much as 42,000 calories but this seems on the high side. In 1995 a BBC Arena programme estimated Elvis’s daily intake at 94,000 calories a day. For comparison, the typical diet of an adult Asian elephant contains 50,000 calories a day.
