The Stilo's interior space and practicality are up with the best in the class, and refinement leaves little to be desired. List of standard safety equipment is also impressive.

Against
Handling is not as sharp as class leaders', and the steering feels lifeless. Comfort and luxury equipment makes way for high level of safety kit.

Performance
The engine range spans from 1.2 litres with 80bhp, to a 2.4-litre five-cylinder with more than twice that. Of them, the economical 1.6 is the best bet, with its free-revving nature and decent mid-range pull. The 2.4 provides the performance option, while the 80 or 115bhp diesel will attract drivers who want long-range economy with easy-going driveability.

Ride & handling
This is the best-driving Fiat hatch yet, but Stilos differ greatly depending on the model. The sporty three-doors have a firmer set-up than the family friendly five-doors. Diesel and Selespeed versions also feel firmer, but the 1.6 has the best blend of ride and handling. However, lifeless steering and a slight underdamped feeling mean the Stilo can't rival the best.

Refinement
The full engine range in the Stilo impresses with its smoothness and, while some are audible under acceleration, the sound you hear is a pleasant rasp. Wind noise gradually becomes more of an issue, but it's only really obvious once you reach motorway cruising speeds. The controls are all well weighted and the five-speed manual changes gear smoothly.
