Divisioonat, joissa on paljon veneitä, jaetaan luokkiin tasoituskertoimen (TCF) mukaan.
TCF lasketaan veneen mittojen pohjalta, lisäksi vaikuttaa ainakin taittolapapotkuri ja spinnu/genaakkeri.
Esim. keulapotkurin jarruttavaa tunnelia ei hyvitetä, mistä moni perhevene kärsii.
Lopputuloksena kaksi venettä, joilla on lähes sama TCF, voivat joutua eri luokkiin.
Toisaalta taas luokkien sisällä suurimmalla ja pienimmällä TCF:llä voi olla melko iso ero.

The Competitive Side of the ARC
01-Nov-07
ARC Racing Handicaps
The ARC is a cruising rally with separate Racing Divisions. The Racing Divisions use the IRC Handicap system. Typically about 15% of the fleet participate in the Racing Divisions of the ARC and enjoy their own start.
ARC Cruiser Ratings
In order to provide some fun competition in the Cruising, Multihull and and Invitation Divisions, each cruiser is given a World Cruising Club Rating, which is used to provide a handicapping system for the event and allows reasonable competition between similar sized cruising yachts, makes and models, of varying ages.
The Rating is based on yacht information given by owners on the entry form and is calculated using the normal parameters of yacht handicapping, including: Length Overall, Waterline Length, Displacement, Beam, Draft, Sail Measurements [I,J,P,E] and an allowance for age.
World Cruising Club Handicaps
The ARC is a cruising rally. To enable fun competition between yachts, those wishing to join in either Cruising Division are given a World Cruising Club TCF (time correction factor) or handicap. This is a number used to adjust a yacht’s elapsed time (total time taken for the crossing) to enable all yachts to compete on a more even basis. For example, a yacht with a TCF of 0.995 would have its elapsed time reduced by this factor, whilst a TCF greater than 1 would increase the elapsed time.
The World Cruising Club Handicap is an easy to administer, self measurement system which relies on information provided by skippers, which is then moderated by the ARC organisers and the yacht builders. Participants should remember that the competition is for fun and enjoyment. A level of sportsmanship and honesty is expected from skippers and crews in accurately providing yacht measurement details, and in reporting the number of engine hours used during the crossing.
The WCC handicap is only as accurate as the information provided by the owner to World Cruising Club, and as a result the handicap, or TCF, may not always reflect the true performance of a yacht. Similarly, some yachts are always going to enjoy the beam reaching and surfing conditions of the Atlantic better than reflected in their handicap, and compared to other yachts of a different displacement and design.
World Cruising Club TCF’s are assigned to the ARC fleet in Las Palmas and can be questioned up to the Thursday before the start date.
The ARC is a cruising event and the rating is for “fun competition”. The Racing Divisions are for the racing yachts, using an international handicapping system. Yachts not wishing to take part in the ARC competition, and yachts for which no measurements are received, will be placed in the Open Division, outside the competition.
Corrected Time
In the Cruising, Multihull and Invitation Divisions yachts are allowed to motor for a limited distance, although use of the engine is penalised. Motoring is classed as the engine running with the gear lever engaged in ahead, with the shaft and propeller turning. The following formula is used to calculate corrected time (CT):
CT = ((Elapsed Time + (Engine Hours x Motoring Factor)) x WCC TCF)
Where the Motoring Factor is a number between 1 and 2 depending on the average weather conditions encountered by the whole fleet during the crossing.
Racing Divisions
Yachts wishing to race in a competitive manner, should opt for the ARC Racing Division or Invitation Racing depending on the yacht's length overall (LOA), using the IRC rating system. An IRC rating is required for the Racing Division. IRC certificates can be obtained from the RORC Rating office:

Rating certificates may also be obtained from rating offices in France, Italy, Spain and the USA.
Changes to Handicaps
At registration in Las Palmas, each skipper will be given a copy of the measurements of his/her yacht used for the TCF. All skippers are required to check the measurements and sign to confirm they are correct.
World Cruising Club TCFs are published in Las Palmas on Wednesday 21 November. Any requests for changes or review must be notified to the organisers in writing by 1200hrs on Thursday 22 November. No amendments will be accepted after this time.
