The Roma (Gypsy) situation in Europe today,
First of all, I have to introduce myself: I am a 58 years old Roma man from Finland, who has worked with Roma issues for 40 years. The work has always been linked to Roma or other minority issues. I was the first Roma man in Finland who got “a high position” in Finnish local government. After that I went to the Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Foreign affairs and OSCE, EU, the Council of Europe etc. All the time I was also a strong NGO-man, a fighter for Roma rights in Europe and on an international level. I have met Roma in every country – except for Malta!
I have worked longer periods in Kosovo at the war time, Brussels and within the European Network against Racism (ENAR), The Embassy of Finland in South Africa, focussing on the black peoples’ living after Apartheid and so on. I could never believe, ten years ago, that the Roma situation would be as bad as it is today. I knew that the Roma are the most discriminated people in the world, but now the Neonazism and the Rightwing parties have become so strong in Eastern Europe and, of course, in Austria and Italy. To be honest, I need to tell you that the European Union cannot handle this issue in a proper way. The forces of the EU are outside the Union and they should be in Europe, covering the Roma people from being beaten, killed or seeing their houses being burnt down by illegal Fascist armies and others thinking the same way about this minority.
You cannot understand how strong the hate towards the Roma is in our European countries, this you have to face. Hungary is the most dangerous place for Roma today, there have been killings of six people or more this year and there have been many more during the previous years. I want to share two cases from this year with you.
First, a small boy, in his father’s arms, was shot. Immediately thereafter they shot the father who had been running out of his house that had been put on fire, as the case always is. The authorities first claimed the father and the son had died because of the fire, but during the investigations it was seen that the boy had many bullets in his body.
In the other case, they shot a Roma mother and her daughter. The mother died instantly and the girl is in intensive health care. The daughter was shot in the neck and the arm. I have not got the newest reports on the girl’s situation yet.
This is a picture of what is happening to the Roma people, not to talk about the other bad treatment of this people.
In Italy, the authorities would like to have the Romanian Roma being registered, carrying badges with registration codes on their arms. Also, they should leave their fingerprints to local authorities.
As you can see, this indeed, takes us back to the era of Mussolini.
The issue about the Roma today, has risen to a completely new level, because of the Romanian Roma – and some other groups, too – have recently moved all over the countries of the European Union to beg for money that could be sent to their families in Romania. They are in Finland, too. I was very disappointed to hear that one of the EU-countries, Northern Ireland has followed the violent acts known from Eastern European countries. On the level of the European Parliament as a whole, I fear that members of the Parliament, elected thanks to strong anti Roma support, will soon be very close to a majority position. With the possible help of the Right wing party FPÖ in Austria this may be reality in a rather close future.
I hope that Canada will, once again, help the Roma people and evacuate persons from Czech Republic and Hungary. I am very grateful for the help our Roma group has become from Canada. This country has welcomed many suffering Roma as refugees. This same goes for Ireland. Those two countries have given access to housing, education and work. As for the other European countries I am rather worried – why did they act more powerfully to help the biggest minority with the biggest problems in Europe? How shall this end?

Olen tavannut Roma kaikissa maissa - lukuun ottamatta Maltaa!
Olen erittäin kiitollinen auttaa romaneja Group on tullut Kanadasta. Kuten muidenkin Euroopan maiden olen hieman huolissani - Miksi he toimivat voimallisemmin auttaa suurin vähemmistö suurimmat ongelmat Euroopassa? Miten on tätä varten?
