Mazda3 vai Focus?

Miksi Volvo tekee näitä ritsoja? Olihan jo edellinenkin S40/V40 sarja täysin ala-arvoinen esitys. Eikö näille voisi antaa vaikka nimen Daf tai jotain, jotta eivät pilaisi 60-80 sarjalaisten mainetta. Onko seuraava 60:nen pullistettu Mazda6:sen seuraaja, häh?

Kompaktes Stufenheck-Modell auf Ford-Focus-Basis

the new Mazda 3, which shares much of the development and parts with the S40,

Although Volvo designed the S40, it can’t take full credit for developing the car, which shares architecture with the Mazda 3

Ford, Mazda, and Volvo collaborated on the C1 platform, contributing to and drawing from the development pool. The fruits of this labor came to be known as “global shared technologies,” or the basic components—underbody, suspension layout, steering, etc.—utilized by the three brands.

That miserable old car - the small Volvo S40 that was introduced in 1995 to no applause whatsoever - has finally been replaced. The old car, with a poor-quality interior, a choppy ride, and slow, unenthusiastic handling, shared several components with the Mitsubishi Charisma (Europe-only) . It has taken Volvo almost ten years to create a replacement. Volvo fanatics ought to pray that it is good.

The new Volvo S40 may well be Volvo's most sporting car ever. On the other hand, it could be one of the biggest mistakes Volvo has ever made. Never before has the Swedish car maker shared so much with its new owner, Ford Motor Company; so many resources could be put to good use in this new vehicle. On the other hand, while all of Volvo's larger vehicles (S60, V70, S80, etc.) share a single, useful, and well-thought-out platform, the new S40 does not. Instead, it has become a next-generation Ford Focus with a new look. How will the S40 perform?

The S60 and S80, claims Volvo, are sporting sedans. Most members of the international automotive press would disagree. Whether such is due to the car's shared P2 platform or Volvo's intentional dumbing-down of the chassis, there is little possibility that Volvo will be able to significantly improve these cars dynamically until they are replaced by the next generation of the cars. The Ford Focus suffers none of these problems. Since its debut in 1999, it has been heralded universally as the best handling small car. It seems only obvious that its replacement, the Focus MkII, coming in 2005, will be an equally good car.
