Luin tänään Keski-Suomessa tapahtuneesta pedofilia-tapauksesta. Uskomatonta: äiti ja useampi miesystävä olivat hyväksikäyttäneet kolmea tyttöä, joista pienin oli vasta 1-vuotias ja vanhemmat 4-vuotiaita hyväksikäytön alkaessa. Sitä oli kestänyt n. 4 vuotta. Kuvottavaa!! Mielestäni pedofiliaan syyllistyneet ihmiset pitäisi steriloida/kastroida vankeustuomion lisäksi. Ovathan asiantuntijatkin todenneet jo sen, että tästä sairaudesta ei voi parantua. Tässäkin tapauksessa äitihän voisi tehtailla vapautumisensa jälkeen taas pari uuttaa lasta ja jatkaa touhujaan. Tuomiot ovat aika alhaisia tällaisissa tapauksissa; tässäkin tapauksessa osalla porukasta ehdollista. Lisäksi pedareiden nimet pitäisi julkaista, jotta muut ihmiset voisivat suojella omia lapsiaan näiltä pervoilta! Ehkä julkinen häpeä ja inho voisi ajaa nämä hullut itsemurhaan, joka mielestäni olisi hyvä asia! Kun valitettavasti kuolemanrangaistusta ei Suomessa voi saada.

-Some people will bitch about privacy, rights, etc. but if you're a parent I can understand why you'd want to warn people. "People" who commit inhuman acts should be stripped of their so-called rights.

Pedophiles Can Be Anyone:
Pedophiles can be anyone -- old or young, rich or poor, educated or uneducated, non-professional or professional, and of any race. However, pedophiles often demonstrate similar characteristics, but these are merely indicators and it should not be assumed that individuals with these characteristics are pedophiles. But knowledge of these characteristics coupled with questionable behavior can be used as an alert that someone may be a pedophile.
Characteristics of a Pedophile :
•Often the pedophile is male and over 30 years of age.
•Single or with few friends in his age group.
•If married, the relationship is more "companion" based with no sexual relations.
•He is often vague about time gaps in employment which may indicate a loss in employment for questionable reasons or possible past incarceration.
Pedophiles Like Child-like Activities:
•He is often fascinated with children and child activities appearing to prefer those activities to adult oriented activities.
•He will often refer to children in pure or angelic terms using descriptives like innocent, heavenly, divine, pure, and other words that describe children but seem inappropriate and exaggerated.
•He has hobbies that are child-like such as collecting popular expensive toys, keeping reptiles or exotic pets, or building plane and car models.
Pedophiles Often Prefer Children Close to Puberty:
•Pedophiles often have a specific age of child they target. Some prefer younger children, some older.
•Often his environment or a special room will be decorated in child-like decor and will appeal to the age and sex of the child he is trying to entice.
•Many pedophiles often prefer children close to puberty who are sexually inexperienced, but curious about sex.
Pedophiles Work Around Children:
The pedophile will often be employed in a position that involves daily contact with children. If not employed, he will put himself in a position to do volunteer work with children, often in a supervisory capacity such as sports coaching, contact sport instruction, unsupervised tutoring or a position where he has the opportunity to spend unsupervised time with a child.
The Target Child:
The pedophile often seeks out shy, handicapped, and withdrawn children, or those who come from troubled homes or under privileged homes. He then showers them with attention, gifts, taunting them with trips to desirable places like amusement parks, zoo's, concerts, the beach and other such places.
Manipulation of the Innocent:
Pedophiles work to master their manipulative skills and often unleash them on troubled children by first becoming their friend, building the the child's self esteem. They may refer to the child as special or mature, appealing to their need to be heard and understood then entice them with adult type activities that are often sexual in content such as x-rated movies or pictures. They offer them alcohol or drugs to hamper their ability to resist activities or recall events that occurred.
Stockholm Syndrome :
It is not unusual for the child to develop feelings for the predator and desire their approval and continued acceptance. They will compromise their innate ability to decipher good and bad behavior, ultimately justifying the criminal's bad behavior out of sympathy and concern for the adults welfare. This is often compared to Stockholm Syndrome - when victims become attached emotionally to their captors.
The Single Parent:
Many times pedophiles will develop a close relationship with a single parent in order to get close to their children. Once inside the home, they have many opportunities to manipulate the children -- using guilt, fear, and love to confuse the child. If the child's parent works, it offers the pedophile the private time needed to abuse the child.
Fighting Back:
Pedophiles work hard at stalking their targets and will patiently work to develop relationships with them. It is not uncommon for them to be developing a long list of potential victims at any one time. Many of them believe that what they are doing is not wrong and that having sex with a child is actually "healthy" for the child.
Almost all pedophiles have a collection of pronography, which they protect at all costs. Many of them also collect "souvenirs" from their victims. They rarely discard either their porn or collections for any reason.
One factor that works against the pedophile is that eventually the children will grow up and recall the events that occurred. Often pedophiles are not brought to justice until such time occurs and victims are angered by being victimized and want to protect other children from the same consequences.
Laws such as Megan's Law - a federal law passed in 1996 that authorizes local law enforcement agencies to notify the public about convicted sex offenders living, working or visiting their communities, have helped expose the pedophile and allows parents to better protect their children.

Let's continue with understanding the problem of sexual predators today. Let's understand just how big the problem really is. The FBI states on their February 2007 website statistics:
-1 of 5 girls will be sexually molested before her 18th birthday.
-1 of 6 boys will be sexually molested before his 18th birthday.
-1 of 5 children has been propositioned for sex over the Internet.
-2 of 3 sexual abuses are perpetrated against teenagers or younger children.
-90% of sexual assaults are committed against someone the perpetrator knows.
-The median age for male molestation victims under 18 is 9.8 years old.
-The median age for female molestation victims under 18 is 9.6 years old.
-There are 400,000 new victims of sexual assault every year.
-There are over 550,000 registered sex offenders in the US.
-There are over 100,000 sex offenders that fail to register in the US.
-76% of serial rapists claim they were molested as children.
-Over 40% of male juvenile delinquents were molested as children.
These statistics are unacceptable. Some studies show in the last three years an increase in sexual abuse statistics, as well.
The problem with statistics is that is neutralizes the affects of abuse on the people that are touched by it. Statistics make the victims depersonalized and faceless. The victims, the children, are the ones that really suffer and abuse will affect them for a lifetime. Abuse affects all that it touches, too, including family and friends. Some victims struggle their entire life to overcome the horror of abuse.
Statistics are fine to make our point. But the real point is the poignant stories of the victims. Even in our field, we are constantly struck by the number of individuals who come up to us and tell us their stories of their lives and the negative effects foisted upon them by sexual predators.

Oikeanlaisen rangaistuksen määrääminen lapsiin sekaantuneille aikuisille on vaikeata: miten määritellä ja korvata menetetyn lapsuuden tai nuoruuden arvo?
Lisäongelma syntyy siitä, että pedofiilit ja insestian harjoittajat eivät pidä itseään rikollisina lainkaan, vaan pitävät muuta yhteiskuntaa ja heidät tuomitsevia ihmisiä outoina. -Eihän siitä ole kuin muutama vuosi aikaa kun Suomen pedofiilit julkaisivat oman kirjansa, jossa todistelivat ettei pedofilia ole muka rikollista toimintaa tai lasta vahingoittava toimintaa lainkaan. Lasten mielipidettä ei kirjassa kysytty yhtään sen enempää kuin psykologien, terapeuttien tai sosiaaliviranomaistenkaan mielipiteitä.
Pedofiili ei "parane" koskaan. Seksuaalirikolliset uusivat tekonsa useammin kuin muut rikolliset. Siksi tuomioiden pitää olla kovia (ennaltaehkäisevä pelote).
Näihin tapauksiin pystytään puuttumaan paremmin, ja myös ennaltaehkäisyyn pystytään paremmin, jos mediakynnys ylittyy. Kerrankin voidaan sanoa, että median herättämä yleisen tietoisuuden kasvaminen tämän ongelman suhteen hyödyttää koko yhteiskuntaa. -Ja lapsia.

"Mikä muuten erottaa pedofiilin ja homon toisistaan? Muu kuin halun kohde?"
Outo näkökulma ajatella väkivaltaista asiaa, tekijän näkökulmasta, jossa tekijä (pedofiili) joko katselee lapsipornoa tai koskettelee ellei jopa sekaannu lapseen, puolustellaan onanointi tai yhdyntätarpeen tyydyttämisellä? Hyvin ovat pedofiilit ajaneet asiaansa jos toisen kohdistuvaa pahoinpitelyä käsitellään tällä tavalla. Tuo onanointitarve ja siihen tarvittava kuvamateriaali sinällään on täysin eri asia. Mistä sen tietää, etteikö tälläinen toimintatapa ole täysin tietoinen ja pakonomainen, samalla tapaa kuin yritys onanoida papukaijan kanssa?
Tuskin nykyaikana aikuisen raiskaamistakaan puolustellaan seksin tarpeella tai puolustellaan toki, mutta ei enää ole oikeutus teolle.
Homot pääsääntöisesti erottaa pedofiileistä selkeästi se, että siinä on kyseessä kahden aikuisen ihmisen suhde tai sitten kahden nuoren suhde, ei raiskaus tai alaikäisen painostamista seksiin keinolla jos toisella. Sitä voi pohtia vaikka hamaan tappiin asti onko se itselle luotu halu toiseen vai täysin sisäsyntyinen halu, mutta mitä ihmeen merkitystä sillä loppujen lopuksi on, aikuiset voi pelmiä toisensa kanssa jos siltä tuntuu.
Samahan se on myös heteroseksuaalisuuden kanssa, jokainen tekee tietoisen valinnan kehen kohdistaa halunsa ja tunteensa, jos toinen ei halua ei auta, vaikka kuinka esittäisi esimerkkejä kautta historian kuinka esim. naiset ovat alistuneet pakkoavioliittoon joissakin kulttuureissa ym. vastaavaa ja tähän nojaten odottaa että ilmoitus hääpäivästä riittää naisen saamiseen.
Kyllä Suomen oikeusoppineet osaavat priorisoida asiat hienosti. Lievä raiskaus P****le. Koettakaapas jättää esim. veroja maksamatta. Häkki heilahtaa ja hyvä jos enää koskaan päivänvaloa näet.

Heinäkuu 2008 : Hyväksikäyttäjän tuomio lieveni hovissa
Lapsen seksuaalisesta hyväksikäytöstä tuomittu 58-vuotias kuopiolaismies välttää vankilan.
Itä-Suomen hovioikeus lievensi torstaina yhdeksän kuukauden ehdottoman vankeustuomion neljän kuukauden ehdolliseksi rangaistukseksi.
Uhrina oli alaikäinen poika. Käräjäoikeuteen asia tuli loppuvuodesta 2006.
Hovioikeus alensi kipu-, särky- ja kärsimyskorvaukset 4 000 euroon ja hylkäsi kokonaan korvausvaatimuksen opintojen viivästymisestä. Tuomiolauselmasta ilmenee, että uhri joutui sairaalahoitoon ja terapiaan. Jutun asiakirjat ovat salaisia tuomiolauselmaa lukuunottamatta.
Helmikuu 2008 Hovioikeus vapautti hierojan seksuaalirikossyytteistä
Itä-Suomen hovioikeus on hylännyt seksuaalirikossyytteet, joista pohjoissavolainen mieshieroja tuomittiin käräjäoikeudessa vuodeksi ehdolliseen vankeuteen ja sakkoihin. Hovioikeus vapautti 47-vuotiaan miehen vankeusrangaistuksesta ja vahingonkorvauksista.
Helmikuussa 2008 Hovioikeus alensi miehen tuomiota lasten törkeästä hyväksikäytöstä
Itä-Suomen hovioikeus tuomitsi tiistaina 59-vuotiaan kainuulaisen miehen seksuaalirikoksesta kahdeksi vuodeksi ehdottomaan vankeuteen.
Miehen syyksi luettu rikos käsittää lapseen kohdistuneen haureuden ja törkeän lapsen seksuaalisen hyväksikäytön.
Tammikuussa 2008 Lasten hyväksikäytön tuomio muutettiin ehdolliseksi
Itä-Suomen hovioikeus on muuttanut puolankalaismiehen vankeustuomion kahdesta lapsen seksuaalisesta hyväksikäytöstä ehdolliseksi.
Syyskuussa 2007 Hyväksikäyttäjän vankeustuomio lyheni.
Itä-Suomen hovioikeus on tuominnut 48-vuotiaan joensuulaisen miehen kahdesta lapsen seksuaalisesta hyväksikäytöstä puoleksitoista vuodeksi ehdottomaan vankeuteen.
Kesäkuussa 2006 syyte lapsen törkeästä hyväksikäytöstä kaatui itäsuomen hovissa
Itä-Suomen hovioikeus vapautti eteläsavolaisen miehen käräjäoikeuden määräämästä yli kahden vuoden ehdottomasta vankeusrangaistuksesta.
Mikkelin käräjäoikeus oli määrännyt miehelle lapsen törkeästä seksuaalisesta hyväksikäytöstä, lapsen seksuaalisesta hyväksikäytöstä ja pahoinpitelystä yli kahden vuoden ehdottoman tuomion. Mies vapautettiin myös 11 000 euron vahingonkorvauksista.
Joulukuussa 2005 Hovioikeus kumosi raiskaustuomion
Itä-Suomen hovioikeus on vapauttanut syytteestä 51-vuotiaan miehen, jonka Joensuun käräjäoikeus tuomitsi raiskauksesta vuodeksi ja kahdeksaksi kuukaudeksi ehdottomaan vankeuteen. Mies vapautettiin myös yli 3 000 euron vahingonkorvauksista.
Joulukuussa 2005 Itä-Suomen hovioikeus määräsi vankeusrangaistuksen sijasta miehen 200 tunniksi yhdyskuntapalveluun.
Mikkelin käräjäoikeus tuomitsi miehen kahdesta lapsen seksuaalisesta hyväksikäytöstä kymmeneksi kuukaudeksi ehdottomaan vankeuteen kesällä 2004.
Hovioikeus hylkäsi kuitenkin toisen syytekohdan, jossa oli kyse kesällä 2001 tapahtuneesta teosta. Teon uhri oli tuolloin 14-vuotias. Hovioikeuden mukaan teko ei ollut seksuaalisesti olennainen. Juttu määrättiin salaiseksi 30 vuodeksi.
Kesäkuussa 2005 Itäsuomen hovioikeus hylkäsi tuomion seksuaalisesta hyväksikäytöstä
Itä-Suomen hovioikeus on hylännyt kainuulaiselle yli 70-vuotiaalle miehelle määrätyn puolentoista vuoden ehdottoman vankeusrangaistuksen, jonka hän sai 10 vuotiaan lapsen seksuaalisesta hyväksikäytöstä Kajaanin käräjäoikeudessa viime kesänä.
Helmikuussa 2005 Lapsiseksituomio lieveni Itä-Suomen hovioikeudessa
Itä-Suomen hovioikeus lievensi torstaina rangaistusta, jonka Nilsiän käräjäoikeus oli määrännyt yläsavolaiselle miehelle viidestä lapsen seksuaalisesta hyväksikäytöstä.
Kahden ja puolen vuoden ehdoton vankeustuomio aleni vuoteen ja kahdeksaan kuukauteen ehdollista vankeutta, minkä ohessa mies joutuu suorittamaan 60 tuntia yhdyskuntapalvelua.
Uhreina oli neljä 13–14 -vuotiasta tyttöä. Rikosten tekoaikaan vuosina 2001–2002 mies oli 25–26-vuotias. Käräjäoikeuden tuomio on salainen.
Helmikuussa 2005 hovioikeus vapautti alaikäisen tytön hyväksikäytöstä tuomitun miehen ehdollisesta vankeusrangaistuksesta ja rahallisista korvauksista.
Tammikuussa 2004 hovioikeus kumosi 66-vuotiaan miehen 3,5 vuoden vankeustuomion törkeistä lapsen seksuaalisista hyväksikäytöistä. Uhrit olivat 12-15-vuotiaita poikia.
Lokakuussa 2003 lieveni 31-vuotiaan miehen raiskaustuomio ehdottomasta vankeudesta ehdolliseksi, koska hänellä oli pitkä työsuhde. Hovin mukaan miehen työnantaja oli ilmoittanut työsuhteen päättyvän ehdottoman tuomion takia.
Suomen vankiloissa samat henkilöt ramppaavat vähän väliä sisään ja ulos kun sattuu vapaudessa rahat loppumaan ja tarvitsee ilmaista täyshoitoa.
Eivätkä monet heistä todellakaan mitään pikkuisia leikkirikoksia tee.
Suomen on rankalla kädellä tiukennettava tuomioitaan tai homma todella karkaa käsistä.
Henkilökohtaisesti en välitä USA:sta paljoakaan mutta yksi asia siellä on oikein nimittäin tuomioiden ankaruus.
Siellä kun teet vakavan rikoksen niin istut todellakin niin pitkän osan elämästäsi että se todella kirpaisee.
Eikä siellä todellakaan rikollisia päästetä lomille vankilasta.

Suomi on oikeusvaltio ja lällällää. Onko näin? Saavatko nuo pienet lapset, joihin omat vanhemmat ovat kajonneet ja vielä kaupanneet heitä muillekin halukkaille - saavatko he oikeutta. Ei ole mitään niin julmaa rangaistusta, joka olisi liikaa tuollekin noille ihmishirviöille. Kuolemanrangaistus olisi aivan liian helppo, eikä yhteiskunnan varoilla kannata tuollaisia elättää, niille rahoille olisi paljon parempaa käyttöä eikä vähimpänä nuo hirviöiden omat lapset. Olen kuullut, että vankilan hierarkiassa pedofiilit ovat alinta kastia ja tilaisuuden tullen vankitoverit hoitavat oman osuutensa rangaistuksista. Toivotaan, että näin pääsee käymään. Vankilatkin taitavat joutua suojelemaan, ettei mitään pahaa pääse asukeille - kenellekään - tapahtumaan. Harmi!!

9 vuotias seksuaalirikolliseksi? HAHAHAH!
En jaksanut kaikkia viestejä edes lukea läpi, senverran yhden ihmisen armeijalta vaikutti tämä threadi, kuten tuossa joku ylhäällä sanoikin.
Tuomioita pitäisi ehdottomasti koventaa nykyisestä hallussapidosta ja jakamisestakin, mutta esimerkiksi katsomista ei voi kriminalisoida. Kirjoitinkin siitä esimerkin toiseen threadiin. Ihan liian helppo lavastaa toinen syylliseksi. Esim. voit kotisivullesi tehdä jäynälinkin , joka ohjaa suoraan johonkin arvelluttavaan materiaaliin, vaikket itse sitä millään tavalla hae. Näen suuria ongelmia tässä. Ne jotka eivät sitä hoksaa, tietävät ihan liian vähän netistä ja sen toiminnasta. Kaiken lisäksi kaikki jäljet voidaan peittää netissä esim. Anonyymi proxyllä, jota käyttävät piraatit, pervot ja ihan tavalliset ihmisetkin, jotka haluavat surffata anonyymisti. Ja kaiken lisäksi nämä palvelun tarjoajat eivät edes pidä logeja , eli vaikka olisi 4 oikeuden päätöstä antaa logitiedot, niin tyhjästä ei voi nyhjäistä. Eli loppujen lopuksi ainut valvottava porukka on ne tavalliset netinkäyttäjät ja heidän astuminen "miinaan" joko vahingossa/ilkivallan takia jne.

MYTH #1: "SEX OFFENDERS WILL ALWAYS KEEP OFFENDING."
Recently the Bureau of Justice Statistics published a study which tracked 9,700 sex offenders for three years, 2001-2004. Their findings concluded:
* Only 5.3% of these people imprisoned for sex crimes were rearrested for a subsequent sex offense.
* Where a child was involved, the rearrest rate dropped to 3.3%.
* Between two adults, the sexual reoffense rate was 2.2%.
A more multifaceted meta-analysis was done in 2004 by the office of Canada's Solicitor General, Karl Hanson. This analysis involved 95 studies tracking 31,000 sex offenders. These studies had an average follow-up period of 5 years and found:
* The recidivism rate for once-caught pedophiles was 12.7%.
* The overall once caught recidivism rate (includes adult victims) was 13.7%.
Contrary to widespread public opinion, once-caught sex offenders have a very low recidivism rate. With or without treatment, more than 87% of the once-caught do not commit another sex crime. With treatment, the likelihood of re-offending is even lower.
MYTH #2: "TREATMENT DOESN'T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE."
The public has been told for years that treatment doesn't work, that "for sex offenders nothing works," but here too a myriad of major studies indicates otherwise:
* The Campbell Collaboration analysis of 22,000 individuals found that treatment reduced recidivism by 37%.
* Canada's Karl Hanson's 2000 analysis found a reduction of 41%.
*
* Oshkosh Correctional's meta-analysis from 79 separate studies of over 11,000 sex offenders found that people who participated in treatment programs had a 59% rearrest reduction.
* According to Alexander's 1998 study, "Men arrested for having sex with children are usually overcome with shame and remorse and they want to stop. Since 1943 those who were treated in jails, hospitals and outpatient clinics found their way back to prison at a rate that was approximately one-third of those who had no treatment."
* By 2005, most all preventative programs showed that rearrest rates were being reduced by greater than half. With some of the latest deep aversion and victim empathy regimens, reductions were reported as high as 91%.
* There is now a credible concurrence that "treatment works" and that new programs are becoming increasingly more successful.

MYTH #3: "THE GREATEST THREAT TO OUR CHILDREN COMES FROM STRANGERS."
* According to the most recent major study by the Bureau of Justice Statistics (2004), where 9,700 sex offenders were tracked, only 7% of such crimes against children were perpetrated by strangers.
* The majority (93%) of molestations of children are not committed by strangers but by people who are known and trusted within or about the family.
* Throughout the last decade, other arrest studies have found similar results. Most sex offenses are committed by a family member or guardian/family member (often some parental substitute).
* It may be a trusted uncle, father, stepfather, mother, family friend, a teacher, coach or a priest; but in almost all cases the culprit is not a stranger.
If we keep in mind that 93% of the culprits are family or known to the family, and that 87% of sex offenders who are caught do not re-offend, then it would seem that most registries or residency restrictions or tracking of individuals will be very close to a waste of time. Such procedures will not make our communities any safer. In fact, there's evidence such measures will do the opposite.
MYTH #4: "BANNING SEX OFFENDERS FROM PLACES WHERE CHILDREN CONGREGATE WILL SIGNIFICANTLY PROTECT OUR CHILDREN."
To claim school yards, daycare centers and other places where children congregate need legislation or Global Positioning Satellite (GPS) geo-fence to keep sex offenders away may sound sensible, but again the facts do not fit the reality.
The fact is that most sex offenses take place in or near one's home and that only 7% involve strangers. Furthermore, only a tiny percentage of sex offenders have any history of kidnapping or molesting children unknown to them.
Perhaps among the safest places for children to be are those where they are together in numbers. School personnel are paying more attention than ever before, and older kids are keeping more of a watchful eye. People --even kids-- look out for each other in public places.
Finally, making it difficult for sex offenders to find places to reside means that they will have a much harder time re-integrating themselves into society, which is what most of them want to do.
MYTH #5: "TOUGHER LEGISLATION IS THE ONLY SOLUTION."
In the U.S., our judges are learned and principled and render few decisions without due diligence. Very stiff punishments for child murderers are certainly called for, but punishment is just only when it is proportioned to the severity of the crime. Such judgments should remain in the courts, subject to very specific deliberations --they should not be rendered in the legislatures, where careful deliberation is impossible.
If legislation is based on the false premise that recidivism is inevitable rather than rare, and if blurs the line between sex offense and murder, then it will result in laws that promote public shaming and permanent exclusion. These laws presume and promote lifelong guilt, ruling out all hope of change. Thus they not only clearly violate the Constitution, but they actually encourage more of the very crimes we are trying to reduce.
If we truly want fewer victims, we should adopt a more holistic approach to reintegrating sex offenders back into society. The focus should shift from more and harsher punishment to the funding of good treatment programs. Although such a shift may have little current appeal among the public today, treatment is the only sure way that we will see fewer victims of these types of crime.
Given all the degrees that sexual offenses can take, one type of sentence does not fit all. What do you do with a 17-year-old who had sex with a 15-year-old? What do you do if he was 19? What if it was consensual? Does he get registered for a lifetime as a sex offender? What about an 8-year-old who plays doctor? What if he's 14? That fact is that nowadays even juvenile sex offenders are being branded for life.
MYTH #8: "SEX OFFENDER REGISTRIES ARE NECESSARY TO PROTECT SOCIETY."
Posting names, addresses and photographs on a Sex Offender Registry is not only a risk to those on the list; it can also lead to unintended, inappropriate and destructive consequences for the whole community.
Registries tend to treat all sex offenders the same way, without reference to the severity of their offense, their responsiveness to treatment, or current assessment of the risk they pose. It is seen by some as an opportunity to harass the offenders and even worse.
While it is certainly in order to professionally monitor and discipline sex offenders for various prudent periods, we must also try to be fair about how offenders are handled. Permanently branding them on registries or making targets of them with conspicuous tracking devices will only aggravate the problems, not solve them. Unfortunately, when a partially informed public is allowed and encouraged to become watchdogs, sex offenders face greater risk of confrontations by the public, due mainly to anger and hostility. Some people even feel that they have a warrant to harass offenders and make life miserable for them.
Since the start of Community Notification, there has been a growing number of serious beatings, not only of sex offenders, but sometimes of their family members or people with whom they live. Some confrontations have led to tragedies. Two sex offenders were murdered in Maine. In this case, the victims were no longer likely threats; one was simply a young man who at 17 had a 15-year-old girlfriend. Had their names, addresses and photographs not been on the state's registry, had the two been simply monitored by probation and treatment professionals, they would not have been spotlighted by some zealot who apparently thought he was doing the work of God.
A little wall sign at one of NCIA's clinics gets a lot of applause from those in treatment:
"Permanent brandings may be all right for cattle,
but they shouldn't be for people."
If we want to be humane, that sign is correct. If we want former offenders to regain their health and not be always on the run, we should not set them up to be stalked. Vengeful prescriptions that call only for more and more punishment will not produce a cure. Since so few of the once-caught remain a threat, there are smarter approaches than alarming communities with registries and turning all levels of former offenders over to the general public for surveillance.

Eli kuukaa katselkaa vain toisianne pöydän yli siellä kotona ja vahtikaa toistenne liikkeitä. Kannattaisiko asentaa kamerat kotiin? Nauhuri nauhoittamaan muutamaan paikkaan?

If we want fewer sex offenders and fewer victims of these types of crime, we have got to be more levelheaded. We should see to it that the public and our legislators inform themselves better about these myths and learn to distinguish the reality from the many distorted ideas that are abroad. "
