Microsoft will shut down its disaster communication service Vine in October after concluding it is "not sustainable as a standalone offering".

The Microsoft Vine service, available as a beta testing program since April 2009, was dubbed the 'Twitter for emergencies' by social commentators when it was first unveiled.

A dashboard let you see maps and other information about the location of loved ones, as well as any alerts about their status. But despite testing it for more than a year, Microsoft has decided to discontinue the service.

In an email to Vine members, Microsoft said: "Despite positive feedback from customers like you over the course of Vine's private beta, Microsoft has made the decision to discontinue Microsoft Vine effective October 11, 2010. After this date, you will no longer be able to access Microsoft Vine."

"The decision to discontinue future development of Microsoft Vine was not easily made. Multiple options were thoroughly explored and evaluated with rigor and in the end it was determined that Microsoft Vine is not sustainable as a standalone offering."
