well,well
Between oil and oil there is a different.
The VW Castrol you are talking abot it is probably the 505.01 or some of the SLX, doesen't really matter because they are defenately too weak for an older BMW motor. Actually they are 0W-30 and made exspecially for the (crap) TDi PD´s.
OK, it is fine in a VW or in Audi, but it isn't working in a BMW.
BMW also has they 'own' (Aral) oils in original BMW cans, and there are also LongLife 0W-, 5W- 's but they are not meant for an E34. They can be suitable in moder engines to maintain long oil-changeing intervalls. ( Personally I don't think that they should be used in a BMW at all, exspecially when driving hard.)
If I should guess, you have left the 200.000km in your 525 a long time ago behind. So, in that engine you should have some thicker oil as well, even for a brand new E34 BMW doesen't recommend 5W-30 lubricants. This information would be advisable to know at Laakkonen too!
If you want to do your best for your engine fill it with TWS, or RS Formula 10W-60, (carefull, coz there are RS 0W-40 as well) or if you want to be more economoc GTX Magnatec will work without problem, but in my opinion the worst idea to save money on engine oil's.
1 example: Toyota (sorry for offtopic) 260.000km, filled with Esson Ultron 5W-40, what considered to be a fine oil, oil consumption 0,5L/1.000km. The same engine filled with GTX Magnatec 0,5L/4.000km .
There must be some different between lubricants.
there was some verry good imformation about what oil is best for a bit older bmw engine,i believe you,the car has left jus under 200000km and it is running on tws 10w-60 now without any of those problems i had before with the wrong oil!
I believe, that Castrol has absulute the 'top of the line' lubricants in any use of field. But it isn't really Castrol's properties what are important, the main issue is they reliability.
For sure there are several other products exists with the same or even better properties, (like RIM - the russian space technologie), but while you are using Castrol, you don't need to worry about 'Is it good, or not?' Sine historycal time of automobilism Castrol where there and allways present with they best lubricants and continous developement. Probably you can't ignore the importance of experience.
Why Castrol?
1. It is my personal experience, I have seen many different cars with a lot of different oils. Several problems as well, extensive wear, leaks, oil consumption, tiff shifting, high nose etc. This kind of problems were never present while using Castrols. You can ask around people who knows something about motor vehicles and has some experienc with Castrol products, what are they comments?
2. I had a several Owners Manuals in my hands, RR , Jensen , Aston Martin, where stated with capital letters that 'USE ONLY CASTROL LUBRICANTS'
.( You could say that: well, but those are british made cars ) ,yes they are, but for example Alpina isn't and states too.
yes, the turbodiesels requires a somewhat weaker oil, the 0W-40 is probably fine for your engine, like RS Formula 0W-40.
But if I would own that car I would probably use TXT Softec 5W-40 's. (I don't know, should try.)
The 525 with 400tkm, smart! He didn't tell you eighter, how much compression he has left, how much oil the engine consume at 100km, and how the whole thing sounds. Exactly for this kind of people ProLong (and other magical stuffs) are advertised! :D
Jees, tuota Castrolin 10W60:stä on myynnissä Ainakin Motonetissa.
