********Breaking news*********************************************
With reports that Pierce Brosnan has retired from playing the world's favourite secret agent and no actor issued with a new license to kill, speculation is mounting that Sean Connery is set to return to the role that made him famous.
Our sources have suggested that Connery, who has mysteriously pulled out of the production of the upcoming movie, Josiah's Canon, is secretly being lined up to appear in the next James Bond flick.
At the age of 74, commentators have questioned the credibility of a septuagenarian 007. One Bond expert suggests: "it would be a case of Q issuing James Bond with a dart-throwing walking-stick and a turbo-charged stair-lift!"
However, rumour abounds that Connery would play an elderly James Bond, brought out of retirement when a son of an old adversary seeks revenge. "If anyone can play a 70 year old Bond, it is Sean," enthused our contact. "You only need to look at Sean's recent films like The League of Extraordinary Gentleman or Entrapment to see he has twice the energy of men half his age!"
Sean Connery, regarded by many as the definitive 007, created the template of the suave spy in the 1960s, with classics such as From Russia with Love and Goldfinger. After a tempestuous relationship with the producers he stormed out of the role in 1967, only to be lured back one more time in 1971, vowing never to play James Bond again.
With speculation that Connery is once again set to pick up his Walther PPK and get behind the wheel of his Aston Martin, maybe he has finally learned the lesson in the title of his 1983 James Bond comeback movie: Never Say Never Again. Perhaps the first cinematic Bond has finally come to terms with his love and hate relationship with the role.
