It would seem obvious due "occam's razor" that the will to control and possess knowledge about individuals should eventually lead to an attempt at gaining these.

Where resides power, hunger for it grows.

The model of our society is eating itself and it does not spare any. Control over others will always be something deemed precious, and the ones having the most of it are sitting on a throne that constantly has it legs chewed upon.
In the modern society, media has grown to have the outmost power to affect views and opinions of masses, and most of media is in the end controlled by corporations and industries, politicians, bureacrats and plain rich people.

Question arises, "Who benefits of the masses becoming increasingly alike, more numb to mass propaganda and more eager to hang other people in public for their misgivings, from molesters and rapists via teen age gangs to people of ethnic, religious or sexual minorities?"

I would say, that regardless of the earlier question, anyone pursuing these goals is either going for benefit on short term, has misjudged his aim, or is planning to ,in some form, depart from this planet earth.
