On an interview on Russian television in November, in which Yastrzhembski saw Finland as part of a "Russophobic" group within the European Union.
Next day in the Finnish Parliamentary, Liisa Jaakonsaari (SDP), chairwoman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, did admit that not everything was all right. Jaakonsaari proposed increasing the availability of the Russian language in Finnish schools. Education Minister Tuula Haatainen (SDP) answered that local authorities were being encouraged to persuade young people to choose Russian language as their first foreign language. Then Foreign Minister Tuomioja (SDP) spoke from personal experience, saying that his greatest regret is that he stopped studying Russian, which he started 30 years ago. "Maybe some day I will start those studies again", Tuomioja said wistfully.
