Superb Petrol
Colgate and Kellogg's make it clear on their packets that they don't make products for anyone else. They feel the need to tell you this so you don't buy the cheaper, larger supermarket own brand produce in the belief that there's no difference.
Sadly for Volkswagen, it can't claim the same with its Passat now that Skoda has borrowed all the best VW ingredients for its new family saloon. To make up for the lack of brand image that its German counterpart is blessed with, Skoda has made its four-door bigger and cheaper, too.
We were impressed by the diesel Superb we sampled in Issue 687, but it's the entry-level petrol cars which will offer the serious value and are set to make a big impact in the UK. For those of you unfamiliar with the Superb concept, the Czech manufacturer's flagship is a perfect blend of Passat and Skoda Octavia, with a hint of Audi A6 thrown in for good measure. It's not only good-looking, but also 100mm longer than the Passat with all the extra length installed between the wheels. It is also longer than the Audi and BMW's acclaimed 5-Series.
Does this mean the smaller petrol engines struggle to cope with a car this substantial? The smooth and torquey 150bhp, turbocharged 1.8T is undoubtedly the pick of the bunch. The unit combines decent performance with cleaner CO2 emissions - essential for company car drivers - and less fuel consumption than the entry-level 2.0-litre. But with a starting price likely to be less than £15,000, it's hard to overlook the normally aspirated engine. Although it only produces 115bhp and 172Nm of torque at 3,500rpm, the unit is perfectly adequate.
But don't expect much performance - the ageing eight-valve powerplant sounds harsh at high revs and struggles to cope with the Superb's 1,412kg kerbweight. The last petrol engine in the line-up is the familiar 2.8-litre V6, recently retired from the Audi range. The flagship of the Skoda family and the main force behind the firm's push upmarket, it has the quality and size to justify its star billing.
So is the Superb a hit? As robust as a Passat with better driving dynamics, and roomier than a Mercedes S-Class, we think it will cause a few sleepless nights at VW's Wolfsburg HQ - and put a smile on the faces of bargain-hunting buyers across the UK.
No matter how Skoda and VW bosses portray it, the new Superb is a threat to Passat sales. It's cheaper, bigger inside, handles more precisely, rides better and is equally well built. The 2.0-litre petrol isn't the best option - the 1.8T more suits the weighty demands of an executive saloon - but Skoda UK should have little trouble shifting its target of 1,000 cars this year.

Tuo 2-litraisen suorituskyky.
Ensimmäinen kateellinenkin on sitten näemmä jo ilmoittautunut...
Pitäisikö sitten sanoa, että "kylläpä tuo kaksilitrainen on sitten oikea tehotykki, maailman paras" ?? Jos totuuden laukominen on kateellisuutta, niin olkoon sitten. Kyllä tuo kommenttini kaksilitraisen onnettomuudesta pitää tasan tarkkaan paikkansa. 115 hv tänä päivänä on TODELLA surkea saavutus, muut repivät jo 1,6-litraisista samat tehot 10 vuotta sitten. Joten jos olet poju noin herkkähipiäinen, niin älä osta minkäänlaista autoa. Saattaa vielä joku sitä arvostella...
Eihän tuo 2-litrainen tehoilla pröystäile mutta enpä voi sanoa että uudet 1,6:t ovat maailman mukavimpia ajella. 4000-5000 kierrosta kelloon niin sitten kulkee mutta alle sen ei tapahdu juuri mitään. Kuka sellaisella jaksaa ajella kun saa koko ajan huudattaa konetta ja kepittää vaihteita. Vääntö se on jolla auto liikkuu ja tuosta vanhasta padasta sitä löytyy pienilläkin kierroksilla. Varmaan hinta/laatusuhteessa Superbiin paras kone on joko 1,8T tai 1,9 TDI 130 hv.
