One of the first people to fly over Antarctica was Richard E. Byrd who conducted several expeditions to Antarctica in the early 20th century. While Byrd's expeditions are well-documented, there are claims that his diary contains hidden secrets that the government does not want the public to know. A currently popular conspiracy theory suggests that on his first flight over the inland he wrote of passing a mountain and then seeing nothing but green grass and a forest that was home to a surviving population of woolly mammoths.
The conspiracy theory then goes on to suggest this is why “they” closed off all of Antarctica to the public. Presumably “they” being the fifty-plus countries that regulate the territory under the Antarctic Treaty System, except for one major problem - the antarctic isn’t actually closed to the public. As it turns out the government doesn’t really have to do much to convince people not to vacation in places where the air is so cold breathing can kill you. If you really want to go explore the south pole there is very little stopping anybody outside of possibly money and common sense. The restrictions in place are designed to protect the fragile ecosystem to preserve it as a place of scientific study or for safety of travelers where rescue missions are unlikely to be able to occur. - Anonyymi00003
Antarctica is actually becoming the subject or setting of many conspiracy theories that are outlandish, such as being embraced as the location where the “flat earth” ends guarded by reptile-people or where resurrected prehistoric giant spiders were released by the government. The strange belief that Byrd saw mysterious things on his flight over the southern pole seems to have originated with Artificial intelligence.
Internet sources trace back to a book called Mysterious Antarctica published out of Canada by Lost Books that purports to reveal Byrd’s diary and images of a secret lost civilization. When contacted, the author said the images were generated by AI and he chose to leave the watermarks on the images so as not to specifically deceive. He also said about 50% of the text was also generated by AI.
“If you say ‘here is how disinformation works,’ a lot of times they will tune you out or be actively hostile,” the author of the controversial book explained, “Instead, I’ve chosen to demonstrate by using real world examples in hopefully low-harm topics, such as lost civilizations in Antarctica.”
It’s wildly unnecessary to make up facts about Antarctica because it’s already one of the strangest places on the planet, home to a waterfall that seems to pour blood and the former cryptid kraken now known to be the colossal squid that lives deep in the icy waters surrounding the uninhabited continent - this frozen land needs no fiction.
Those hoping to see woolly mammoths once again roam the Earth, there may be hope yet in the style of Jurassic Park.

The above two statements by the greatest explorer in modern times, Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd of the United States Navy, cannot be understood nor make any sense according to old geographical theories that the earth is a solid sphere with a fiery core, on which both North and South Poles are fixed points. If such was the case, and if Admiral Byrd flew for 1,700 and 2,300 miles respectively across North and South Poles, to the icy and snowbound lands that lie on the other side, whose geography is fairly well known, it would be incomprehensible for him to make such a statement, referring to this territory on the other side of the Poles as "the great unknown".
Also, he would have no reason to use such a term as "Land of Everlasting Mystery". Byrd was not a poet, and what he described was what he observed from his airplane. During his Arctic flight of 1,700 miles beyond the North Pole he reported by radio that he saw below him, not ice and snow, but land areas consisting of mountains, forests, green vegetation, lakes and rivers, and in the underbrush saw a strange animal resembling the mammoth found frozen in Arctic ice. Evidently he had entered a warmer region than the icebound Territory that extends from the Pole to Siberia. If Byrd had this region in mind he would have no reason to call it the "Great Unknown", since it could be reached by flying across the Pole to the other side of the Arctic region.
