Jewell wants fringe men to take chance

Wigan boss Paul Jewell has urged his fringe players to seize their big chance to make an impression against Watford in the Carling Cup third round on Tuesday.

Jewell will once again make wholesale changes for the JJB Stadium clash as he refuses to risk putting his side's amazing form this season in jeopardy.

But Jewell believes those players who line up have every chance of forcing their way into the reckoning for a Premiership bow.

Jewell said: "We've got a decent squad and if we get injuries and suspensions then someone's misfortune is an opportunity for somebody else.

"We've got a good mix of experienced players with pace and hunger and if you put the three of them together at the moment we are doing okay."

Jewell insists his first priority this season remains simple survival despite the Latics looking down from their lofty perch of fourth place in the Premiership after Saturday's 2-0 win at Aston Villa.

And having changed his entire team for the narrow second round win over Bournemouth, Jewell will continue with the same policy in order not to risk that amazing start.

Jason Roberts picked up a slight thigh strain against Villa and is almost certain not to be risked while Lee McCulloch is still suspended.

The likes of Stephen McMillan, Matt Jackson and Ryan Taylor can expect starting places while Mike Pollitt could get another chance replacing John Filan in goal.

Jewell explained: "We know we have got to perform to our optimum in nearly every match to get a result and that takes an awful lot out of us.

"But the players are fit, they are full of desire and determination and there are some good players as well."
