Baby, you can drive my car!
John Lennon's 1970 Mercedes 600 Pullman is up for
sale again. The car is one of only 428 Pullmans
ever built. Three of the Beatles, John Lennon,
Ringo Starr and George Harrison , owned 600s.
Lennon took delivery of the white 600 on February
19th, 1970 from Woking Motors in Walton on Thames
with the registration BPH 600H. The specification
of the car, as ordered by Lennon, included a rear
seat upholstered in black velour and a remarkable
array of audio equipment. The car ended up in
America where Mary Wilson of the Supremes had it
fitted with US-style bumpers and tinted windows.
It was then bought at an auction of pop
memorabilia by a businessman from Finland and
displayed that summer where it attracted a vast
amount of publicity. But the owner wanted it
restored to its original condition and this led
to one of the most complete and remarkable car
restorations of recent times by engineers in
Stuttgart who had been involved with the 600
twenty years earlier. The engine went to the
Berlin factory where the original tools were used
to undertake a perfect rebuild of the power unit.
All body panels and doors were replaced and the
hydraulically operated windows and sunroof were
meticulously restored. New woven velour was
obtained from the factory that made the original
and the audio equipment was restored to the
condition when John Lennon first sat in the back
of the car. It was the most expensive and
complete restoration ever carried out by Mercedes-
Benz for an outside customer. The car is expected
to fetch top money when it goes under the hammer
at London's Hard Rock Café on 27th March.

osti liikemies joka ei halunnut nimeään
julkisuuteen, verottajan takia ilmeisesti.
