Deadly fungus gene code cracked

Scientists have cracked the genetic code of a fungus responsible for deadly infections and allergic reactions.
Aspergillus fumigatus , which causes more infections than any other mould, is particularly dangerous to people with weakened immune systems.
Researchers at the Institute for Genomic Research hope their work could lead to better diagnostic tests, and treatments for fungal infections.
Their international collaboration is reported in the journal Nature.

This study does for the first time start to give an indication of why such closely related species in nature can have such different effects

From garden compost to forest greenery, the mold Aspergillus fumigatus lurks across much of the world. Now, in the December 22 issue of the journal Nature, TIGR scientists and their collaborators report the mold's sequenced genome, along with the genomes of two relatives.

It's a complex task. Suspect genes encode proteins involved in central metabolic pathways, cell signaling, cell wall biosynthesis, pigment biosynthesis, and secondary metabolite production. In other words, A. fumigatus's virulence genes are likely complex and mixed up with normal metabolic capabilities, Nierman says.
He and his colleagues now plan to systematically "knock out," or disable, genes that might make A. fumigatus infectious. Eventually, Nierman adds, this work could lead to better therapies for serious asthma, allergy, and other conditions.

Kerron muuten huomenna SUUREN uutisen.
