Yleisen virheuskomuksen mukaan anaaliseksiä harjoittavat lähes pelkästään homomiehet. Näin ei tosiaankaan ole. Arviolta kolmasosa homopareista ei harjoita anaaliseksiä. Noin kolmasosa kokeilee sitä toisinaan.
Arviolta 10 prosenttia heteropareista harjoittaa anaaliseksiä vakituisesti rakastellessaan. Absoluuttisina lukuina, anaaliseksiä harjoittaa useampi hetero- kuin homopari.
