Most of us are familiar with the hadith, reported by Anas, Radi-Allahu unhu: "To acquire knowledge is the duty of every Muslim man and woman." What kind of knowledge does this hadith refer to? The same as is meant in this hadith: "The scholars are heirs of the Prophets. The Prophets do not leave behind an inheritance of gold and silver; they leave behind the inheritance of knowledge. Whoever acquired knowledge, acquired a lot of wealth."
Does it mean that every individual Muslim must also become a religious scholar? Not at all. What is required of an individual is only sufficient knowledge that can enable him or her to carry out their religious obligations. As a minimum every Muslim must learn the articles of faith and what they really mean. He or she must also learn the laws and teachings of Shariah as they relate to their life. The basic rule is that accompanying every religious duty is another duty to learn about the requirements of that duty. Thus it is our duty to learn Shariah teachings about Salat, Fasting, Hajj, and Zakat. For a businessman, it is a religious duty to learn Islam's teachings about economics and halal and haram transactions. For a person getting ready to get married, it is a religious duty to learn Islamic teachings about marriage and spousal rights and responsibilities. And so on.
28. Samoin on muodoiltaan erilaisia ihmisiä, eläimiä ja karjaa. Vain ne Hänen palvelijoistaan, joilla tieto on, pelkäävät Jumalaa; totisesti Jumala on mahtava, anteeksiantava.
He also said: Whosoever Allah wishes good for, He bestows upon him understanding of the Deen. [Bukhaari and Muslim].
He a1so said: The superiority of a learned man over a worshipper is like my superiority over the ordinary men from among my companions. [At-Tirmidhi. Hadeeth Hassan].
The Messenger of Allah said: Whoever treads a path seeking knowledge therein, Allah directs him to a path leading to Al-Jannah (Paradise). [Hadeeth Hassan]
He also said: The quest for knowledge is a compulsion on every Muslim. [Hadeeth Hassan]
Is there not a difference between two persons who say. "Laa ilaha illa Allah" (there is no deity worthy of worship but Allah), while one has a heart filled with correct beliefs, and the other is a hypocrite who disbelieves in everything in Islaam? Surely there is, the first will go to Al-Jannah (Heaven) and the other will be in the lowest depth of the Fire of Hell. Why is this so? Because of the beliefs in his heart, which are its action.
Knowledge of His Messenger, Muhammad . This includes understanding his purpose as a messenger, his rights on us, our relationship with him. This knowledge is important because through the messenger we learn how to worship Allah and perform His rights i.e. the messenger came to invite to tawheed and to fight mankind to keep away from worshiping other than Him.
Allah said: VeriIy we sent to each nation a messenger to invite to the worship of Allah and to avoid Taghoot.
