Welcome to my website.
My first year as the Commissioner for Enlargement has been an eventful period. Bulgaria and Romania continue to make progress in their preparations for EU accession to join the Union in January 2007, provided that they meet all the accession criteria in time. The EU opened accession negotiations with Turkey and Croatia in October 2005. The countries of the Western Balkans have made important progress and have demonstrated a clear European perspective.
I have also presented a strategy for enlargement for the coming years, which can be summarised in “three Cs”. The EU’s commitments on enlargement have to be consolidated. The strict application of conditionality means that any country aspiring to join the Union has to fulfil the membership criteria. The concerns of EU citizens about European integration and enlargement can only be eased by communicating better the objectives and challenges of the accession process. We must ensure that enlargement remains one the EU’s most powerful tools, which extends the zone of peace and stability, liberty and democracy, prosperity and solidarity across Europe.

Pelle-Ollilla ei ole vaikutusvaltaa oikeastaan ollenkaan. Laajentumiskomissaarin salkku on komission jakojäännöksiä ja Rehn on hoitanut tätäkin hommaa heikosti.
Rehn on muuten urallaan tähän mennessä epäonnistunut oikeastaan kaikessa, mihin on ryhtynyt. Kepun puheenjohtajaksikin tämä Pelle-Olli yritti, mutta hävisi katkerasti Anneli Jäätteenmäelle.
