Who wants to be perfect anyway?

BRAINS and beauty are like water and oil: this view has become so entrenched that exceptions to the rule—such as Linda Lampenius, the Finnish virtuoso violinist with Baywatch looks—are almost regarded as freaks of nature. But is the belief founded on empirical evidence or the prejudices of the unprepossessing?

The answer isn't obvious but the claim that symmetrical people may be brainier than their more lopsided rivals is hard to square with the folklore view. Physical symmetry is, after all, an ingredient of beauty. And according to some biologists, it is also a sign of developmental good fortune in the womb leading to virility, fertility and a strong immune system in later life.

Now that brains have been added to the list are the days of himbos and bimbos numbered?

Alas, the correlation between intelligence and symmetry is not quite strong enough to sweep the old prejudices away. There is plenty of scope for people to grow up into lopsided geniuses or symmetrical dullards. But that shouldn't dismay us. In some branches of biology, perfect correlations and firm evidence of causal links are rarer than star violinists who look like Pamela Anderson.
