Onko tekeillä jotakin? Halonen salaa yrittää ujuttaa Suomea Natoon sittenkin? Miksi muuten Suomi ajautuu lähes Natoon?
“NATO values Finland”
Finland has remained outside of NATO but it does have close links to the organization otherwise. Finland has taken part in NATO-led crisis management operations.
Ambassador Ware refuses to comment on Finland’s NATO membership.
“I don’t think it would be appropriate. First, the United States does not invite members to NATO. Furthermore, Americans don’t think it is their business to give advice to Finns. It is entirely up to the government of Finland when and how Finns want to discuss the issue.”
Ware stresses that Finns are highly regarded in NATO. “Those who have worked with Finns feel enriched by the inclusion of competent Finnish officers and Finland’s technological prowess”
She emphasizes that NATO’s role has expanded from the traditional mandate in defense to crisis management. “The larger role benefits all of us. It makes NATO increasingly effective.”
“I hope that the Finnish government will continue to engage in the cooperative projects offered by NATO. “
Finland also has bilateral military cooperation with the United States. A Finnish group participated in a simulated crisis management exercise in Norfolk in February and this month. Finland contributed information technology expertise. Last fall, a group of 15 American officers received training in peacekeeping at the Niinisalo training center.
“The exchange of information is important. In the U.S., a discussion is underway about the fact that in addition to soldiers, we also need peacekeepers. In this respect we can learn a lot from you,” the Ambassador says politely.
