Finland`s stability will be threatened seriously by the current right-wing government and Prime Minister Vanhanen, if the secret plan to join NATO comes true. PM Matti Vanhanen is known with good reason as a “mother of all turncoats” in a big political issues in Finland and the same signs are again in the air regarding a membership of NATO. The decision to join NATO will possibly wreck the military consistency of Finns and this is the most fateful issue to Finland.
Except that most of Finns, about 80 %, are against the membership of NATO, the Finnish Left wants mostly a defensive cooperation with Russia. The leaders and politicians of Social democratic party for example have tried to lick the Right`s boots and NATO, against the Left voters´ will, but this has led for its part to serious electoral defeat as in this election spring. The Finnish Left does not forget the history.
The former Soviet Union gave among other things a political asylum to the Reds during the Civil War and helped the Left to get the political rights by democratizing and by abolishing fascist system in Finland after the Continuation war. After this all the Left wants to maintain a good relationship with Russia.
Most of the Left also do not certainly want to cooperate militarily with current NATO-members, which have committed to serious war crimes against civilians in Iraq and Afghanistan. There are also signs of such a clear fascism now, where the certain NATO lands will not respect any more military achievements of the Red army in defeating Nazis. It is outrageously against the ideology of the Finnish Left.
In the worst outlook the Finnish Left would be forced to request an assistance of Russia - in the same way as the National Coalition party, the Right, plans to ally now with NATO - to drive out these war criminal NATO troops from Finland. In the war history of Finland such has already happened. The secret and dangerous plan in the right-wing government will ruin our unanimous and mutual Finland.

Personally, I find it hard to understand this unholy alliance between Far Left and fascist Russia, unless it is financed by the latter.
Finland should look after its own national interests, which are neither the interests of NATO or Russia. But there may have to be a choice between them, and if it comes to that, Finland will choose NATO, the lesser of two evils, just as in 1941 Finland had to choose to fight alongside Nazi Germany in order to avoid been occupied by the Soviets. Fortunately the situation is much less serious nowadays (for the time being), but there can be no certainty of the ultimate plans Russia may have to recover its lost sphere of influence in Eastern Europe...
