There was some astonishing in-running trading on Betfair on Monday's ladies fourth-round clash between Serena Williams and Daniela Hantuchova at Wimbledon.
Williams had looked on course for victory after winning the first set, reflected in her being matched at a low of 1.03 (1/33) on the exchange.
But it was 5-5 in the second (and 1/10 Williams, 10/1 Hantuchova) when Williams went down on the baseline clutching her calf in what appeared to be an attack of cramp.
She stayed down for a lengthy period as the trainer was called and screamed out in agony as ice was applied to the calf.
The odds on Hantuchova winning the match then went into complete freefall as she was backed at the lowest possible price of 1.01 (1/100) while Williams drifted right out to 48.
But following the three-minute injury time-out, Williams did continue - at walking pace - and somehow managed to force a tie-break.
Williams lost the first four points and it was 4-2 with the odds fluctuating wildly when play was suspended due to rain which allowed the seventh seed to limp off to the locker room to receive urgent treatment.
The reprieve saw the odds flip-flop again, with Williams going back into odds-on and prompted Betfair spokesman Tony Calvin to say: "I've seen some bizarre betting in my time here, but not a lot can match the trading on Betfair when Serena Williams went down with an injury."
But those who backed Hantuchova at 1/100 - risking �100 to win �1 - were left rueing their over-reaction as Serena pulled through.
After the best part of a two-hour rain delay, Serena lost the second set on the tie-break but then got the better of her increasingly nervous opponent 6-2 in the decider.
In a fascinating affair, Betfair saw �12,261,140 matched on the thriller, perhaps more than twice what would normally be expected.
That was mainly all thanks to punters betting on whether Serena's injury would prevent her from not only winning, but carrying on.
And it was a similar story on the outright front as Williams has been matched at 70 but is now into just 7.4.
