how long must i study

I would say that it would take you 3-5 years to learn to speak Finnish. Some foreigners living in Finland never learn to speak it. They just learn separate words and phrases but they never learn how to formulate sentences.

It took me two years to where I was able to do everyday things in Finnish. Like go to the store, bank, by a bus ticket, ask for help, etc. I wasn't perfect but at least I could handle things on my own in Finnish if I had to. But I want to add I was working for a company with several people who I had to communicate with everyday who didn't speak english. So I had to speak Finnish, that helped me so much!
Anyway, now I have been in Finland 8 years and speak it very well at least according to other people. I can handle any situation and can have a conversation about any topic just about. Its not easy, at least at first, but once you get the basics, your learning speeds up. Good luck!
