Tuomas needn't have worried about Anette...she was born to be on that stage. She absolutely owns the Century Child and Once material, and the new songs were wonderful. Poet/Pendulum, in particular is a stunner live.

It was weird hearing Anette sing the pre-Century Child songs, just because those were so much more tailored for Tarja's voice. It is clear that Tarja has probably a whole step or step and a half at the top of her range that Anette doesn't comfortably have. They tuned down a little bit on "She Is My Sin" and Anette changed a couple of melodies to avoid the very highest notes. Despite that, Anette gave good performances of those songs and didn't try to imitate Tarja--it's just that those songs sound so different now. I don't mean to say that Anette sang poorly in any way. Frankly, it's nice to see that she knows her voice well enough not to strain to hit notes that are outside her range. She made the modifications to the old songs sound very natural. If you hadn't heard the originals, you wouldn't think anything is out of place. I was skeptical at first when Anette was hired, but I'm a believer now. But I suppose it will take some getting used to.

I also must admit that I never got to see Tarja sing live, since I wasn't yet a fan the last time that NW came anywhere near here, so I can't properly compare. Based on the live recordings, though, I think that Anette's voice is more robust and "rock 'n roll," and sounds better live with the band going full blast than Tarja's did. It seems like they had to add lots of recorded backing vocals to fill out things when Tarja sang live. They did some of that for Anette, too, but she was able to carry things better during sections without the backing tracks.

As a performer, Anette is excellent. She has a great rapport with both the crowd and the band, and everybody on stage seemed very happy. The crowd was fired up, and that clearly affected the band. Jaxx is a very small place compared to the places NW plays in Europe--I estimate that it holds about 700 people. And the energy was very high all around.

One thing that really struck me--this is first time I remember seeing the opening night of a tour where everything went right. There were no sound or equipment glitches (the sound was great, considering what a crappy sounding venue Jaxx is), and all five performers were note-perfect all night. They really ought to film this tour somewhere.

I'm sure I'll have more thoughts later, but that's a start...
